You're missing the fact that the frame is tubular. It wouldn't be
manufactured using flat weaves, it would be manufactured by 'filament
winding' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filament_winding). Besides, the
tubular nature of the material (as with any tube) means that the
2-dimensional strength is applied in a 3d situation, so the fact that
its only a planar material makes no difference.

Well having seen a Carbon fibre Muni bounced down a 40 foot rocky slope
and then ridden for another 4 miles of fairly tough muni I think that a
few people are underestimating the strength of carbon fibre and
overestimating the forces that they put through their uni's.

I don't know how Roger put together the carbon fibre muni's that he
built years ago but I have ridden 2 of them and they are still going
strong.

I think the fact that these uni's have been being used for years and
have been subjected to a lot of abuse suggests that however Roger made
them is a good place to start.

Tubular may work for bikes, but perhaps another shape might prove

You got me! I'm no materials engineer, but I have a degree in physics.
Us physicists study a lot of the same topics as engineers, but we tend
to delve more into the theory behind the science, whereas then
engineers focus on the applications. While I'm no expert, I know
enough to be dangerous.

I've molded and formed fiberglass for a number of applications...
namely RC and robotics components... and surfboard repair, if that
counts for anything. I've yet to form CF as it is harder to obtain and
much more expensive. My CF experience is limited to the components on
my unicycle... my broken CF bumpers and my various CF seat bases.

It's good of you to question your sources of information, but at some
point you need to stop questioning and start answering your own
questions... do your homework, hit the books, read web sites,
experiment with materials and draw your own conclusions. You don't
have to be an expert to answer some of the basic questions you're
asking... did you read the links I've sent you? Does any of it make
sense?
