How does one pin down the model year of Campagnolo components? Are there any similar model numbers as is the case for Shimano components?
I have 9-speed ErgoPower levers, but with the new, rounded hood shape. The front derailleur has no (9-speed, 10-speed) markings except "Chorus", but the whole groupset otherwise is for a 9-speed setup.
There is no great system, just have to know when Campy made changes to logos and designs. e-mail [email hidden], he's a Campy (idiot?) savant and loves to trace Campy lineage. I'm convinced he doesn't sleep, just lays there and recites the Campy family tree to himself..............

First year for rounded shape was 1998, first year for 10s was 2000 so yours are 1998 or 1999. Take the back plastic cover off and look at the metal plate covering the shift guts. If it is smooth, no rectangular notches-1998. If it has those(for ERGOBRAIN), 1999.

I go to sleep clutching my Campagnolo teddybear but it's getting worn and if the rumors about 2007 perist, I may have to get a new one(not [censored], of course, not Sram), Maybe start sleeping with tools instead of BRAIN-less 'retail', more repair.

Thanks, Peter. So there were no 9-speed ErgoPower shifters made after 1999?

Which "rumors about 2007", Peter?
Rumors only, with a capital 'R'..no more triples , compact and regular cranks only and introducing the over hyped, overmarketed, outboard bearing type BB for Campag...

They gonna make that in French threading? I'm still riding my '75 PX10. 🙂
It seems like it wouldn't be too hard to make a threadless one - have one "cup" thread into the other, not too different from the Mavic/Stronglight threadless BB.
Maybe this'll prompt Phil to branch out from square taper...

That's unfortunate, but given the poor image triples have amongst the racer/racer wannabe/fast-recreational-rider segment of the market it's kinda understandable. (Not to say the poor image of triples is justified. Nor to say that a "compact double" is a good substitute for a well thought out triple.)

UGH!! It's sad to see Campy get aboard the Pure-Unmitigated-[censored] Wagon.
I have reason to believe my Chorus 9-spd are 1998 (because the 10-speed parts I bought for conversion don't fit). The finger lever is a closed paddle rather than having a cut-out in it. That might have been unique to 1998 9-spd as well.

Found this:
How can I recognize the 9s right-hand Ergopower from the 2001-2005 model? The 9s right-hand Ergopower (2001-2005 range) has the "9speed" mark on the body, the"new style" (rounded) body and it is ErgoBrain computer ready.

2000 and later Record/Chorus 9s is very rare. 2004 Chorus was carbon levered. So it's 1999, thru 2003..There are no real differences...so tough to tell.

From Campagnolo´s website it seems that the telling difference between pre-2001 and 2001-2005, "rounded-hood" Chorus 9-speed ErgoPower is the inclusion of the "9 SPEED" notation on the right hand shifter. Apparently the post-1999, but pre-2001 9-speed stuff looks the same, except for this small difference.
That's unfortunate, but given the poor image triples have amongst the racer/racer wannabe/fast-recreational-rider segment of the market it's kinda understandable.
The campy racing triple was one of the best ideas that campy had about 12 yrs ago. Too bad is hasn't caught on, and people that would benefit from them do not use them for the "image" factor.
I am on the heavy side and cannot spin 3+ teeth chainring on steep hills. There is a training ride where a do about 10 different ten minute climbs that are steep around my neighbourhood. With a double I used to be able to do 5 or 6 at the most before I was wasted. Now, I can easily do ten plus climbs.
Last year I was finishing a double metric century that ends in some hills and rollers. I was riding with two other guys with doubles. On the climbs I would get to spind while they were suffering to keep up. I would slow down and wait for them. At the end of the ride the both commented on what an obvious help the triple was. I bet that they still have doubles in their bikes.
On training rides I usually end up picking and pushing cyclist that get dropped up the hills who are a lot lighter than I am. I am the only geek in the group that I ride that has a triple.

In 1998 Record had the cutout in the small paddle lever, both levers aluminum. Chorus had the solid small paddle in 1998, both levers aluminum. I have 1998 Chorus. Record and Chorus were both 9 speed of course. In 1999, Record changed to carbon levers and the current black look. 9 speed. Chorus stayed with aluminum levers but 1999 Chorus had the cutout in the small paddle lever. 9 speed.
