Well I had a great ride today. Weather was fantastic, sunny, cool and
still, and I felt great after feeling very flat the past 2 weeks. Posted
a PB for the Warrandyte climb dropping my best from 17:25 to 16:50, and
another PB on the Diamond Creek climb from 5:40 to 5:10. And also got my
avg speed to 26.3 up from a best of 25.9 (not helped by walking in
Heidelberg but more on that later).
Only a small group today of me, Brett, GPLama, Essendon 93 and Blah
(only one coffee ordered at Smiths Gully but still took forever). Dutch
wasn't there, some claim of StKilda crits but I suspect that was his
cover for going down for the BRW triathlon (come on Dutch fess up, your
secret's safe with me 😉 I can lend you my tri bars if you want ). The
others promised to go easy on Brett and I so we did the St Andrews leg,
managing to hang on till Hurstbridge and then being dropped.
I think everyone was keeping an eye out for small blue cars with P
plates as we went through Diamond Creek. But this week the fun didn't
start till we hit the back streets of Greensborough. I reckon it took us
an hour and a half to do the last 10km from there. GPLama showed us he
is ready to become the BR bike mechanic ... NOT! GPL's puncture had us
timing how quick he could do a change over. First of all the replacement
tube wouldn't pump up, tried a different pump, removed the tube to find
a hole in the spare (10 mins gone). Borrowed spare from Essendon, amid
jokes of going through all our spares, and GPL starts to furiously pump
"ninja style". As he's pumping all four of us glance down and see the
tyre has escaped from the rim and there are cries of "stop pumping!"
just in time for the tube to go BANG! Followed by all of us cacking
ourselves laughing. GPL borrows another tube (jokes about using all
tubes now threatening to become a reality). Ninja style pumpign
abandoned and we eventually get on our way 30 mins after stopping. Ride
down to Heidleberg event free but just before hitting Burgundy St find
the road blocked for the Heidelberg Fair Parade. By that stage any
thoughts of gettign home at a reasonable hour have been abandoned so we
settle down to watch the parade (GPL showed way to much enthusiasm for
the Boot Scooting display).
