Looking forward to the ride tomorrow, if people are coming out.
Rode down to Mornington today. It was one of my only forays onto Beach Road
ever. Got to St. Kilda after twenty kays and pretty quickly caught up to a
small group of like-speeded guys. Sat on about 33-38kph for about twenty
kays and hardly broke sweat - dead flat with the only real hill taken at
35-odd. Gotta say, I was bored, really. They stopped at the end of Beach
Road so I went solo to Mornington at about 35-40kph on the flat (I think
it's flat, it's along a beach) with the wind (yay). This was hard, but
nothing like an actual hill or anything.
Dunno what I'm trying to say... I think Beach Road in the right conditions
does a lot for cyclists' egos, really. Much more fun last Sunday. -

I'm sure the Hell Ride is a bit more interesting too..? :-)
Dunno if I'll be there tomorrow.. might be filming ice hockey

This is women's ice hockey. There's no checking*
allowed. I haven't seen a fight in women's or men's
yet.. not for lack of encouragement though ;-)* check or checking:
any contact initiated by a defending player against an
opponent to get the puck away from him or slow him
down; there are two main types of checks: stick check
and body check; these are only allowed against a
player in control of the puck or against the last player
to control it immediately after he gives it up; checking
after too many steps or strides becomes charging.hippy

And there are stacks of stuck up roadie snobs pretending to be in
the peloton.Yesterday I rode up Mt Donna Buang for the first time. That was a
fun ride!We were inadvertently riding in amongst the ARC rally cars on their way
up the mountain to the stage start, as well as a bunch of Renault
Alpines out on a club event. It was a pretty tough climb in places but the fun part was descending
18kms in 19 minutes, averaging almost 60km/h 🙂A highly recommended ride.

Tony, there were 6 of us this morning......great weather for a ride as you
would know if you just missed us.I managed 86km/h today after tucking in behind Chris on the first big
downhill (I think Dutchy got 88 though).I also managed 195 bpm on the heart rate monitor when Chris and I went up
the 6th or 7th false crest on the long climb before we turned left down
towards the primary school. I will have to have a real crack at maxing out
one day as I know that I go over 200 bpm without too much problem but I have
never consciously pushed myself to the limit when I had the heart rate
monitor on. FWIW, I am 33 and my resting heart rate is 38 bpm (tested it
this morning when I first woke up to get ready for the ride).Ride On,
Gags

Those stats are pretty fascinating. Having a resting heart rate of 38
implies very good fitness. As you get fitter, your max heart rate drops
also. This is because your heart pumps more efficiently, so it doesn't
need to pump so quickly. The average calculation for max heart rate is
something like 220-age for females and 225-age for males, I think, or
something like that. So your max heart rate if you weren't fit would be
192 and being very fit would imply significantly lower.Geek-girl, who is deciding a PhD is a very, very bad idea and would like
to do some training and then get some sleep. -

That's pretty low - best (lowest) I've ever got was 40 but that was a year
and a half ago when I was actually pretty fit. I've no doubt I was close to
maxing out at the top of Burgundy Street today. Even though Kyra may say it
ain't much, after fifty kays today and a few harder days on the bike this
week, I was wondering with 100m to go if I'd actually get up it. Did, of
course, but it hurt, and if you others were wondering what the noise was,
that was my heart.
Funny, I think we had a tailwind on the first downhill today, but I managed
to clock my slowest ever top speed of 85.6. "Ever" includes four runs so
far, so it's not a great sample.
Thanks for another great ride guys. Saw the long range prediction for next
Sunday's weather - 21 and sunny; yahoo! -
Wow, resting rate of 38bpm is pretty impressive, that's up in the elite level.

I'm gonna have to get in much better shape to follow you guys.

First I've gotta wait for my new bike to get delivered (hopefully it will be here this week), then blow a couple of years of gaspers out of the lungs and get some miles into the legs, and burn off the beer gut, then I'll definately be there. -

for me to crack the 90kph mark.. some other
time. Which way should the wind be blowing
to make that hill a tailwind?hippy
