on a car or motor bike the blow out is much more likely to be dangerous
due to greater speed and mass.

I have a friend who had a blowout and broke his finger after rolling
five times.

That said, he was driving a car at the time.

As in mountain biking, the particular downhill bit in question was about a
three foot vertical step followed by a berm that he also failed to
negotiate, rather spectacularly. The lack of air in his front tyre seemd to
make little difference to velocity or available control.

Heheheh, oops. I meant they controlled the bike and came to a halt
reasonably well, but had to do so in a straight line, they probably wouldn't
have been able to control it around a bend.

Talk about life imitating art! On may way home tonight, near the top of
a hill on the borrowed fixie ...

I had to walk the rest of the way home with bike over shoulder. Nice
split on the inside of the tube. I took the tube out of one of the
wheels of by old bike, fitted it, pumped it up, and as I was putting the
pump away ... <*BANG*> ... It's bloody loud when they go inside about 2
feet from you!. Nice hole roughly in same place, I thought I had checked
the rim, yup looks OK but I put a layer of rim tape down just in case
and take the tube from the other wheel of the old bike. So far ...

No. I have heard tyres go BNAG! and their riders have always remained in
control.

I once had both tyres go BNAG! BNAG! in very rapid succession when I hit
a brick. I was late for work (only one spare tube and no patches for an
8 mile commute) but am very much alive to tell the tale.

I stopped riding clinchers after a front wheel blow out descending the
Col de Revard. The tyre rolled off the rim, locked up the front wheel,
and onlookers said I did two somersaults. Luckily I hit the mountain and
not the drop.
