  1. Up Black Fell from Hartside Cafe today. Two questions:

    1. Is the summit of Black Fell the trig point or the hillock
where the lovely old wall (LOW) traipses up the fellside?
I ask as when we went up Saturday, the GPS elevation was
1m higher on the LOW, not only when we went over, but
also (2 hours later) when we came back from Grey Nag.
This was on both our GPS's. May well be a blip combined
with GPS positioning not being 100%, but wondered if
anyone else has checked it; the OS show a 3m diff.
    2. What would it take to get those sad t**** on bikes, who
infest the Hartside Cafe, a life? Just a little life....

Jeez. I parked my car there today, to nip up Fiends Fell and
Melmerby Fell. Came back down (11.30 am) and it was like
striding into a colony of black basking seals.

All they seem to want to do is to pat each others' machines.
Managed to pilot the car out of the car park (not easy, as
there were massed ranks of Yamaha blocking me), and then
sped down to Penrith, overtaken on every available bend (not
the straights mind...) by 56 year old lunatics. I
    despair......I really
    do....

Could be a blip. If you stand still with GPS it will
wander up and down. Within 5m is quite a normal variation,
so you can't really conclude anything definite from just
3m difference. A GPS with altimeter would give more
    conclusive results.

They've already got a life, it's just not the same life
that you've chosen. Not getting at you but I really hate
this "get a life" insult. Everybody who needs to "get a
life" has already got one, it's just not one that the
insulter approves of. Everybody enjoys their own "life",
not matter how "sad" (another insult I hate) it might
    appear to anyone else.

And I bet they were really enjoying themselves. Probably
thought you were a "sad" [censored] who needs to "get a life".

As I said, not getting at you, just pointing out that
different people perceive the world differently. I bet train
spotters have a great time, just like peak baggers. Everyone
seems "sad" to someone else, and everyone seems to think
that their "life" is the only one worth living.

Good job most non-walkers don't have a life, keeps them off
the hill and gives us some peace and quiet. :-)

Don't knock it until you've tried it? They have got a life,
just as you have. And if the cafe weren't good they'd not be
there. There's just such a caff in Llandovery: 'home' to
loads of bikers, not one of whom would dream of disparaging
those of us who arrive by car. Those whom I've encountered
so far are universally polite, friendly and tolerant; the
food is good (it's just a caff, not a restaurant), the
portions are large and it's cheap. In no way do the bikers
detract from the caff; far from
it. In fact, were it not for them it probably wouldn't be
    as good as it is.

I once left my car in their carpark for a few days wild-
camping - the cafe was closed when I set off. The cafe
owners became concerned that I was lost and contacted the
police who contacted my family. Nice people.

I'd echo Paul and Fran's take on this and add, knowing the
area very well that The caff is well worth the visit... I
recently enjoyed the nearby "summit" of the stone wall
outside as I ate breakfast of fried egg and bacon sarny and
    slurrped extremely quaffable coffee.

Its no surprise the cafe is popular with barkers (of whom I
wish I was one just to ride that road) because the A686 has
been acknowledged, by the AA no less, as one of the most
    scenic routes in the UK.

If I was being wicked I would question the sad-quotient
embedded in the idea of parking at Hartside, altitude 573m
to amble to a comparative dimple some 4k to the south for a
    total height gain of 131m...

but I wouldn't do that because the view from the ridge would
have been worth it; to the West dropping steeply down the
the Eden and East across the bleak moors of the Milburn
    Forest NNR.

  7. Bikers on Hartside... (they are having a good time.. dont
    knock em!)

    Word of warning..

As "basking seals" attract polar bears, bikers attract
police. The Hartside road is a favourite place to find a
    mobile speed camera.

Walked off Cross Fell to Hartside once.. Very fine trip.
