  1. think of the "diet" mentality and the perfectionism thing. If I eat one
thing off the diet I failed because I didn't do it perfect, translated to
exercise, it goes, I MUST do ALL of this NOW and if I don't then its not
good enough... so you go to gym, overdo, and then you are to over worked to
go again in the next couple of day so you skip then perfectionism sets in, I
missed so I failed so I just won't do it at all, am I making any sense, I
feel like I am not explaining this good enough, Lee

  2. Yep. You hit the nail square on the head with that explanation and I'm still not offended. That's
exactly what I do. That's why I'm trying to take it slow and not get myself worked up about it.

I think when I am ready to start going again, I won't make any schedule deals with myself. I'll
just go and see how many times I go to the gym and won't beat myself up for it. As long as the
frequency increases, I will have done well. If I skip a week or something I'll try not to be hard
    on myself about it.

  4. Thanks Lee.

I'm looking at things carefully because I need to change (internally and externally for my own
sake). I've been driving myself crazy over little things that really aren't that important and
that's just no way to live. It's time for me to let all the excess baggage go. I just don't want
to fail because I feel like I've done too much of it in the past-then the self recrimination
    would start.

Just because I *should* do a particular thing doesn't mean that I will until I'm ready. Apparently,
I'm very stubborn and will do said thing only when I'm ready. It just took me years to realize it.

  5. Glen Ellyn is a pretty small town, not much here - probably why I do like it, it's more like the
Naperville I grew up in and remember fondly. I am bordered by Wheaton (East), OakBrook (West),
Naperville (SouthEast) and heaven knows what is North (a lot of other smaller towns). The listed
towns aren't more than a mile or two from my home, it is a busy, busy high traffic area. I don't get
out to Schaumburg often anymore, used to when sonny boy was younger and played a lot of ball there.
Now, the kids seem to venture there more than me - they are the shoppers in the family. <G>

I have visited Atlanta a few times in my youth, had cousins who lived there (Conyers). I do remember
the weather being kind of bizarre in the winter - we hit some nasty ice storms, immediately followed
by wonderfully warm temps ... at least warm by Chicago standards.

I'm sure the ogling of those people at the gyms is more in my mind than what is really happening,
one of those lack of self-confidence issues I continually fight with. It still was enough to put me
off from going. And like you, parking at the back of malls is difficult around here. Biting winds,
driving rain, lots to prohibit me from doing it. I don't cruise the lots, but I have been known to
totally give up and shop elsewhere. Had I chosen to go out today (I didn't, was too frustrated with
trying to get my new modem working with the router), the further parking spaces would not have been
an option. The wind was absolutely horrid! I did go to my local grocery store, got hit with the cold
needle-like rain pelting on me as I left. Winds were gusting horribly by the time I returned home,
branches and garbage cans blowing all over the streets. Then the power started going on and off.
Just another fun day in the midwest. <G> For me, parking at the back of the lots is more of a safety
issue. Not the smartest thing to do for a lone female. I hate to say how many stories I hear of
women attacked when walking alone in parking lots.

Good for you for skipping those birthday cakes! I haven't had the cake from Portillo's but my
youngest girl loves it. Baker's square might have been a different story though ... depending on
what kind. <G> I do understand what your friend is saying about sometimes having to push yourself -
but you don't have to do it all at once. Right now you are pushing yourself with making healthier
eating choices, cutting back on snacking and portion sizes. You'll know when you're ready. Hard to
explain, but for me it was just *one of those days* when I decided to make the move. Much later in
the game, but still better than never. One step at a time, as I say.

I'm in Schaumburg. I've heard of Glen Ellyn, but I'm more familiar with Oakbrook and Naperville.

The only time I missed winter was when I lived in Atlanta where it was "cold" (20s at night) for
only a month or so. Spring hit like gangbusters and I had to start popping allergy tablets in late
    February-it was aweful for me.

Sometimes I feel the way you did. I don't like drawing attention to myself too much at the gym, but
the people here don't ogle as much as where I used to live. I actually do park at the back of the
parking lot at work. It's too cold (windy really) for me to treck across the lot at malls or
groceries, but I don't cruise around for the closest spot in the lot anymore.

Today was birthday cake day for February birthday's where I work. I didn't have any (two cakes from
Portillos and Baker's Square) so I was just talking with one of the women. She asked why I wasn't
having any and I told her that I was watching what I was eating in attempts to lose weight. She is
very enthusiastic about working out. I had mentioned that I wasn't ready and she was saying how
"sometimes you have to push yourself", etc. I understand where she's coming from, but I don't think
I'm ready to start the gym excursions quite yet.

    Oakbrook

LOL! One thing you will never hear me say is that I miss winter. I have

    never

    Quoted message said:

enjoyed the cold. I do like the changes of seasons, but also wish we only

    had 3

    Quoted message said:

of them (guess which one I am omitting).

I never did the bally thing, but did belong to a local health club a few

    years

    Quoted message said:

ago. I had a major problem with going, seemed everyone there were those

    super

    Quoted message said:

skinny model types that made me wonder what the heck they were doing

    there. Ok,

    Quoted message said:

that was the *old* me, now I know what they were/are doing there and can

    accept

    Quoted message said:

it. I guess it was a confidence issue, or lack of. I had no self

    confidence,

    Quoted message said:

felt like the minute I walked in there everyone was looking at the fat

    lady and

    Quoted message said:

just humoring me. So I stopped going. Had I had someone to go with, it

    might

    Quoted message said:

have been different - I don't know though. I think I am just one of those

    loner

    Quoted message said:

type personalities, probably why I knew that the ww storefront and

    meetings were

    Quoted message said:

not going to be the answer for me. I work well alone, I can push myself -

    but put

    Quoted message said:

me in a group and forget it. Again, lack of self confidence? Or maybe

    residual

    Quoted message said:

issues from the severe depression/anxiety/panic junk I dealt with.

If all you feel like doing is 20 minutes, then do 20 minutes! I look at

    it as ...

    Quoted message said:

it's 20 more minutes than I was doing before. Would maybe a home exercise

    video

    Quoted message said:

work better for you? That might be an interim solution to get you over

    the hump.

    Quoted message said:

Or even something as goofy as parking at the rear of the parking lot at

    work,

    Quoted message said:

grocery shopping, malls, etc. That walking is exercise, and more than

    likely is

    Quoted message said:

out of the ordinary routine (although if it's at night it probably isn't a

    smart

    Quoted message said:

idea to be walking that far alone).

If you're not ready, you're not ready. No reason to beat yourself up

    about it,

    Quoted message said:

and no reason to feel guilty. When you feel you are ready, then try

    again. You

    Quoted message said:

CAN lose weight without the formalized exercise - I did and I think Lee

    also has

    Quoted message said:

said she has had no formal exercise. It is more difficult, a bit slower,

    but

    Quoted message said:

    definitely possible.
