  1. Can someone tell me why he felt the need to e mail the NEW YORK TIMES to advertise the fact he is supposedly giving 500000 to the hurricane victims from his laf organasation.
    This is sickening

WHY did he have to tell the papers?
He is looking to gain good pr from it!!!

you'd swear it was from his own pocket

How low will this disgusting CHEAT go ?

Correction, that's the people's money, the people that wanted the money to go towards cancer. If he wanted to make a donation, it should have come straight out of his own bank account.

I've seen this sort of thing before. Michael Schumacher gave money to the tsunami relief, so did Jan Ullrich FYI.

I agree that he's a cheat, but by lowering this down to school boy insults, you're giving bluetrain et al an incentive to show Lance as a victim in all this.

ok i apologise if i came across childish.
this is the sort of things celebs do in general and it is awful

the one person i admire in this situation is russel crowe who says there is alot that can be done by giving your own money to a cause and then shutting up about it

the problem i have is his emailing the new york times to say he was doing it.
if he had given the money quitely, then fair enough but there is only one reason to email the times with this.

    To gain PR

This Not something that is different. Deion Sanders held a press conference announcing he wants each professional athlete to donate a 1,000 each to the fund. George Steinbrenner announced that he is donating 1 million to the fund. Last year quite a few athletes announced through the press that they were making significant donations. Eventhough Amrstorng is under scrutiny, it doesn't make his announcement any different then any others.

I was unable to find the article on the NY Times about the donations though. Does it say he is giving the donation from the LAF Organization, or on behalf of the LAF Foundation? There is a major difference between the two.

why do it through the media, sanders could have done this through by private means.
the donation is good either way but what gets me is how they play it up to the media which will do nothing only get them PR

Its in todays NYTimes, George Vecsey article.
One reason he emailed it as opposed to a big press release would be that its important to SAY something in the face of such an overwhelming human tragedy. As opposed to doing nothing. Good for him.

Many other celebs are, such as Dave Mathews doing an extra concert next week.

and since athletes donations became a story when Serena Williams promised ONLY $100 for each ace she hit during the US Open--John McEnroe went ballistic during the TV coverage given the low amount Serena pledged, how much money she has, and how much press already went to her wearing $40,000 earrings while playing...McEnroe on air pledged 25,000$. So it became a story at least around the USOpen.

Lance could be criticzed for saying and doing nothing, or he could be criticized for saying he was doing something.

So he relatively quietly emailed the NYTimes to make a small announcement...the money is HIS and The LAFs according to the article...so I would assume 50/50%/

  7. Yeah shall we leave it as it is..........it's good that he gave the money.....

PR or just a general interest.......couldn't care; the money is needed🙂

When you donate to specific charity, part of the reason you do so is to encourage others to do the same. You can't raise awareness for your charity if nobody knows you are making a donation.

I think you need to take a serious look at your life. In almost every post I've read of yours, you come off looking like an obsessed jealous fanatic, and it looks pathetic. Get a hobby or something - get over lance already.

The article said the $500,000 will be going to help cancer patients who have been displaced by Katrina to continue their medical treatments. That seems perfectly reasonably in line with the mission of the LAF to me. You should read and think before you speak.

Deoin Sanders did it via the media and challenged all NFL, NBA, and MLB players to donate 1K dollars. That is why he did through the media. Warrick Dunn the Running Back for the Atlanta Falcons did the same thing and challenged all NFL players to donate 5K. Pesonally I think most of these athletes could donate more because they have huge bank accounts but its their business not mine or anyone elses.

It is sickening that he is giving money to "provide ongoing treatment for cancer patients displaced by Katrina?" The article also said he is giving money "from himself and his foundation". What is so "low" about all this? What does gaining good PR in the U.S. have to do with the L'Equipe stuff that is going on in France? LA doesnt need to gain good PR in the U.S. He has plenty of it.

"Lance Armstrong, in an e-mail message to the New York Times, pledged $500,000 from himself and his foundation to provide ongoing treatment for cancer patients displaced by Katrina."

  12. Pfffff shall we please stop.......paolo give it a break will ya! You think he earned his money unfairly okee I can deal with that......but it's a good thing LA gives money to the cancer community and for the victims of Katrina......

And YES LA doesn't need to gain good PR......he has plenty of it in the USA and on this board.....

Had LA sent the email to L'Equipe or The London Times, or to the UCI then I might agree.

Reference? I've not read this and was only responding to Paolo who stated, ''he is supposedly giving 500000 to the hurricane victims from his laf organisation.''
If the money was from his LAF, that would largely be the people's money, capiche?

    Read before you speak.

  16. Ok... One thing is believing that he doped and quite another criticizing him for everything. For one gestures that involve such amounts of money should be announced for quite a few reasons.

    1) Promotes donations from other (as has been mentioned)
    2) Promotes the work of the foundation and attracts future donors
    3) Shows to current donors how their money is being spent and on what causes.

He could have put Stapleton or Korioth to "leak" the information to the press like others do and give the impression that is "low-key" (hope I'using the right expression) but I don't think that this should be his aim here. I think that he handled it correctly and well done to him and LAF for that...

Several athletes do donate alot but its for smaller personal charities they prefer not to have the publicity. Warrick Dunn has a big time charity Build a Home Foundation, where he builds a home for single mothers and pays the move in cost and the first few months of bills for them. This stems from his mother being singled mother raising him him and his siblings and working a couple of jobs to feed them. She was shot and killed working as security when Dunn was 18 and he spent his college years raising his brothers/sisters.

I have read where Charles Barkley would donate a ton of time and money to various charities and make apperance, but said he would cancel it if it got any press. Athletes when they do charitable things, prefer to do it with out questions from press or autograph hunters pestering them. It all depends on the person.

    Exactly.
Besides , if he hadnt made it public , you'd probably be critcizing him for not donating.
Either way the mans in a no-win situation.

Incidentally , how much have those who like to knock him donated to charity or seeing as thats probably not a fair comparsion , how much time and effort have you put into fundraising for any cause?
Of all the things to criticize someone over....
    pathetic.

  20. Making it public does two things: inspires others to do the same AND gives him good PR.

I don't see anything wrong with it and I wish more celebs and horribly overpaid athletes and entertainers would do the same. In fact, if they do it, I want them to tell me about it. Americans worship them as it is, at least if they're doing something charitable, it makes it seem more worthwhile.

And just for the record, the article said it was being donating to help misplaced cancer patients, so that's completely and utterly the point of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. If you have a thing against Lance, which you seem to, that's fine. But obviously it goes beyond that to a point of having "an issue" if you are berating him for giving to charity. Poo on you.
