Thanks everyone for all your responses. Having read all the postings and thinking it over I'm
going to get some protection. Not the Rockgardn or the Dainese, but something a bit less
    cumbersome.

I was comparing prices and hockey pads seem to be alot cheaper. They look very similar in
    constuction.

    Anyone gone that route?

Nope. I use my hockey equipment strictly to play hockey, but you can choose to use it for DH'ing,
they both basically protect the same body parts.

I play hockey. I haven't looked into bike armor, but from my experience:

    * hockey shin guards are very bulky and heavy. Mine even have two layers of padding inside, one of
which is removable so that you can dry it better.

    * lower-end shin guards don't have straps attached. Higher-end ones do, but they're still not all
that great. The socks, and the velcro straps that go around the socks, are necessary to keep
    everything from slipping and sliding.

    * in hockey, your ankle doesn't flex forward/backward much. Hockey shin guards might not allow as
    much movement as you'd like.

Generally speaking, hockey gear is kept in place as much by your outerwear as by actual straps and
such. I'm just not convinced that the fit would be what you'd like.

Oh, also, the elbow pads in hockey don't cover the forearm, as you're expected to have gloves that
come about halfway up the wrist.

Maybe the above are just concerns unique to the gear I've been able to find, so take it all with a
grain of salt, but those are my thoughts.

The funniest part of this is that no sooner than I use the words "chickenshit [censored]" and look
what pops up. Funny how it popped up right around the same time as the frightpig too.

I use the shorter, new Nike gloves, they provide better mobility for stick handling. It seems that
more of the old school hockey gear companies (CCM, Bauer, Jofa, etc.) are going that way too.

So what is that in inches? (I think my glove is 13"😉. Do you have a picture link of the difference?

When I started hockey, my fiance emphasized the need for full skin coverage so that I wouldn't get
damaged by pucks and sticks. My impression was that gloves are "supposed" to overlap with the elbow
pads, although come to think of it, I don't think mine do, quite.

I've seen some gloves that have a harder, narrower inner liner that extends past the main glove.
That looked really awkward. Is that actually the "old school" style?

I just started hockey this year, so I'm all ears when it comes to new info. Haven't found a ng yet,
though, that caters to hockey *players* rather than fans.

    I tried those.

I went right back to my old gloves after the first slash on the wrist.
<G> My wrist hurt for a lot longer than the other guy's penalty lasted.

I use a set of Nike Ignite 3 gloves, 11" (for my tiny hands). They look like these (scroll down):

Have a look at Easton's gloves (the length difference) and you will know what I meant:

The new Nike Quests have that, have a look at their new line:

    nikehockey.comnikehockey.com

That is not old school style. Old school style is meant that the entire glove is longer at the wrist
section and actually used to cover half of the forearm as part of the glove, it didn't have a hard
    inner liner.

Thanks for all the info and links!

Grr, what is it with sporting manufacturer's websites? Why do they feel the need to have animated
[censored] that takes 8 times as long to load as a simple web page? Does any of their users actually
    *want* all that [censored]?
