  1. Anquet now starting to supply aerial info at 1:50,000 scale at £39.95 a
throw. Promising 1:25,000 in the future. Also promising more 1:25,000
    coverage of the country.

They have a free demo of the 1:50,000 series but you need to log onto the
site provided you already have the Anquet software.

This is the email I got from Anquet.
New!! Air photography for Anquet Maps.
On September 24th, Anquet launched a new series of air photography products
covering the whole of Britain south of the Scottish Lowlands. The initial
six products in the range correspond to the areas covered by the Anquet
1:50,000 series and provide the perfect addition to the existing product
range. Photo Map products can be used in conjunction with any other Anquet
    product, at any scale.

The new range offers some really useful features, including the capability
to overlay names of mountains and hills as well as place names over the
photos at the click of a mouse. Users can now view the Anquet Virtual
LandscapeTM with either real landscape images or Ordnance Survey maps. Visit
www.Anquet.co.uk to see further details of this exciting development and to
order Photo Maps from the Anquet on-line shop.

Current users can download a 100 square kilometre sample of aerial
photography as a "map pack" which is available in the updates area, free of
charge. To access this feature you will first need to download the latest
    software.

    Major expansion of 1:25,000 Series
Anquet will shortly announce details of a significant increase in the number
of 1:25,000 scale products available. New titles in England and Wales will
carry aerial photography and will include new CRoW access land as it is
opened. News of this major event will be circulated shortly and details will
be posted on the Anquet web site.

  2. I didn't see this post when I wrote a similar one. I'm intrigued to
know what they mean by "1:25000" aerial photography though - surely
the zoom function means the aerial photography is whatever scale you
want? Or do they mean that more detailed aerial photos will be
    available?

Isn't that the same with maps too?

You can use the zoomfunction in 2D, not in 3D. Of course in 3D you can
*zoom* in by moving towards your objective.
When watching in 2D I advise not to zoom in more than 400% because the
picture gets unsharp. It seems there will be arial photography from Scotland
    available in 2005. Fingers crossed.

No. 1:25,000 maps are pretty damn accurate in terms of placing of
    objects and paths.
1: 50,000 maps are rather obviously less accurate, although if you don't
    use a GPS you wouldn't notice. :-)

Er, yes... but I think we all know what a 1:25k map looks like and
what sort of detail it has on it, and the same for a 1:50k. I mean,
Anquet comes with 1:250000 coverage of the whole country, but I
wouldn't recommend navigating in the hills using a 500% blow-up of
    that...

(Well, it should be equivalent to a Landranger, right?) :-)

    want?

No. What it means is that the resolution is the same as the 25k maps.
1km squares on 50k maps are 200 pixels wide, 1km squares on 25k maps are
    400 pixels wide.

Well zooming in and out doesn't change the native scale of the map. The
scale is named after the scale of the original printed map. Of course,
the scale won't be correct if you zoom in and out, or even at 100% zoom,
it will vary depending on the size of your monitor and what resolution
it's set to. So the "scale" is pretty meaningless on the computer
screen, it's only meaningful if you print out a map section at the
correct scale, but you don't even have to do that, you can enlarge or
shrink it as you please. You do need to print it at the correct scale
if you want to use a romer to take grid refs of it.

In Memory Map you can zoom in or out before switching to 3D, so you can
get 3D displays at different zooms, but of course the area is fixed,
    which is more limiting.

No. Technically, '1:25k mapping' refers to mapping recorded at a scale
of 1:25k, irrespective of the actual scale you chose to look at it.
