  1. Salut

I have an ankle problem that no-one is able to figure out,
least of all me. I want to get (walking and) running again,
and just can't manage more than about 2 miles 3 times a
week. I *know* runners deal with these kinds of problems all
the time. I am not asking for a diagnosis (why do I think I
have to say that?) just some feedback from your experience.

I have swelling around the outside ankle bone on both feet,
but one much more than the other. Apparently I pronate. I
have been using custom made orthotics for a month, and it
has not subsided. We tried aspirating. Nothing. We tried
corisone which stopped the pain for about 7 hours, and the
swelling lessend but came right back.

Any ideas? I do not have heart disease, or diabetes. I've
been "off my feet" since taking a drug from which I had bad
side effects, and not been able to get going since--2 1/2
    years ago.

  2. It sounds like a classic case of "Nikeitis" to me. If not
nikes, then the wrong shoes. Do you really pronate? Do you
still pronate? You could have bad orthotics, and trust me
you wouldn't be the first. I pronate for the first few
weeks/months when coming back from a layoff, but eventually
it stops once I'm in shape. Perhaps you are one of those?
Shoes are your first thing to look at with ankle troubles.

That's real serious to have been off your feet for 2 1/2
hears. Perhaps you have some nerve damage that has caused
you to alter your form drastically. Your first goal should
be to walk pain free. Concentrate on doing that for long
distances before attempting to run. Consider not going to
    the doctor so often.

Thanks for your responses, both of you. Don't have nerve
damage. Do pronate. The doctors have been essentially
useless in this. They think the body ends at the knee. The
podiatrist somewhat more helpful. It would be hard to
determine now if different shoes would improve things. I'm
one swollen mess, again mostly around the bone, but also the
tendon or ligament up the middle of the foot/ankle to the
    leg. On one foot.

    And this in the morning!

I read several runners here talking about physios for foot
    problems. Going there...wearing ice.

I'm listening. My shoes are New Balance 713. Really old Nike
cross trainers and birkie clogs to kick around. Barefoot.

My foot is small, forefoot wide, wonky metatarsals, good
arch, but pronate. The new orthotic is fairly aggressive,
the hard type, custom made, full length with quite a
    metatarsal bump.

Suggestions? Obviously I am going to be walking for some
time. Not running. So that will be a different pair of
shoes. For now, what do you suggest, not so much brand, but
    design, type?

My wear pattern is hard on the outside and inner
    upper. (roll).

Do I need stability etc with the orthotic. Will that be too
    much? Do I need a runner. I really prefer a cross-trainer,
because it is wider on the sole and I feel connected, and
also because they're usually wider in the toe box.

Oh. Forgot to mention but was reading above: left knee
speaking to me. That's the swollen ankle side. Oh yeah. And
tie-back on tensor fascialata on that side. Did I mention
the back fused with metal brackets and screws?
