I'm listening. My shoes are New Balance 713. Really old Nike
cross trainers and birkie clogs to kick around. Barefoot.
My foot is small, forefoot wide, wonky metatarsals, good
arch, but pronate. The new orthotic is fairly aggressive,
the hard type, custom made, full length with quite a
metatarsal bump.
Suggestions? Obviously I am going to be walking for some
time. Not running. So that will be a different pair of
shoes. For now, what do you suggest, not so much brand, but
design, type?
My wear pattern is hard on the outside and inner
upper. (roll).
Do I need stability etc with the orthotic. Will that be too
much? Do I need a runner. I really prefer a cross-trainer,
because it is wider on the sole and I feel connected, and
also because they're usually wider in the toe box.
Oh. Forgot to mention but was reading above: left knee
speaking to me. That's the swollen ankle side. Oh yeah. And
tie-back on tensor fascialata on that side. Did I mention
the back fused with metal brackets and screws?

That's real serious to have been off your feet for 2
1/2 hears. Perhaps you have some nerve damage that has
caused you to alter your form drastically. Your first
goal should be to walk pain free. Concentrate on doing
that for long distances before attempting to run.
Consider not going to the doctor so often.
Thanks for your responses, both of you. Don't have nerve
damage. Do pronate. The doctors have been essentially
useless in this. They think the body ends at the knee.
The podiatrist somewhat more helpful. It would be hard
to determine now if different shoes would improve
things. I'm one swollen mess, again mostly around the
bone, but also the tendon or ligament up the middle of
the foot/ankle to the leg. On one foot.
And this in the morning!
I read several runners here talking about physios for
foot problems. Going there...wearing ice.
