I would love to attend. I love that trail. I remember a night ride
many many years ago. We were consistently hitting speeds of 25+ mph.
At the time I was thinking that riding that fast through the lava fields
was insanity and that we were probably going to suffer horrible
mutilation on the sharp rock, but none of us did. One of the Pauls on
the ride (Paul Andrews) commented that it seemed as if the rocks were
moving aside for us.

Another time I rode it with my friend Khris. We did the full length up,
then back down (that's over 60 miles of singletrack), in 35 dgree temps
in the rain. We loved every minute of it.

Maybe I can weasel my way up there then. That would be superb.

Totally subjective question... ability level? I've I seen it rated
intermediate, advanced, 4/5 etc. I figured I'm just in for a long fun
scenic twisty ride.

There are sections of the MRT that are quite tricky, and if you blow a
move the lava will have its way with you. There are log bridges that
can't be ridden. There are some rock gardens (especially on the shore
of Clear Lake) that are very difficult. Overall, though, most of it is
intermediate at best. If you simply let discretion rather than valor
guide your path, it is really no problem, especially if you shuttle.
It is a long, fun, scenic and twisty ride.

I saw a photo of one of those, you just walk the bike, didn't look like a
big deal to me... tried to save the url but the album was really weird (and
lots of not great pics)

said the lava part at the top was a little tricky, the rest was easy.
I'd go with Miles' more thoughtful review, though.

Maybe I can grab him (and his high mpg car) and join you guys. We
could add some Bend, OR riding that would be superb.

I'm on the books to do it twice!! Mr Adventure and a couple of ski patrol
folks want to do it on Friday as that's the NSP convention "free day" (
biking sounds better than golf or wine tasting) and then of couse sat. Heh,
let's see what I'm made of. ;-)

OK, after AMB ID 04 last weekend I assumed that this ride
was completely out of the question, but it seems I might
have some wiggle room. However, it's an 8 hr drive from
Boise, and I don't have 3 full days (2 for driving and one
for the ride).

There is an outside chance I can talk an MTBing friend with
a small plane into flying down there on Friday night and
joining us for the ride...

My wife's really skittish about having people we don't know stay over for
the night, but I could pick you up and drop you off at a hotel. I'm pretty
sure we can get three bikes in the car

I don't think so...though I think we ended up missing much of the lava
fields on my last ride. Check with Miles - even though he's in LoSoCal,
he's ridden this trail, and he's got plenty of SS experience.

Not that I'm trying to avoid you or anything :-), but Eugene and Portland
are roughly the same distance (as the crow flies) from Boise, so if you
wanted to avoid the 6-hour car ride on Saturday you could just fly to
Eugene. I'm pretty sure Penny will already be there on Friday night.

MRT is further from Portland than I thought. I was hoping
to fly in, hotel, ride and fly back out, but that's not
going to work any way I slice it.

It's looks like my best play would be to just suck it up and
drive the 16 hrs. I don't think my schedule can support that.

Well, Penny will be in Eugene and Gab will be around Bend (I think), so
those are closer options that might allow you to do that. Bend would
probably be closer (both highway and air wise).

There actually is a grass airfield right near the trailhead, depending on
how daring your pilot (and his passenger!) is (do a Google search on
"McKenzie Bridge State Airport"😉.
