Abus Granite 54 lock problem

    Residual Current Device (IIRC) Modern houses may have a socket with one
    built in but if not it is a device which plugs into the wall socket and
    then you plug the extension lead into the RCD. It is there to protect you
    should you accidentally cut through the extension cable or do various
    other electrically dangerous things. You'll be able to get one in Argos
    when you get the grinder.

    Residual current device.. Detects if you have cut through the cable and are
    electrocuting yourself. A good thing to have on all electrical stuff in
    hazardous environs (eg garden, shed etc.

    BTW you do not want a diamond blade, you want a metal cutting blade. There
    is a significant difference.

    A diamond blade will be destroyed if you are cutting straight metal.

    There are two types of blade, cutting and grinding. You want the cutting one
    which is thinner and cheap. I wouldn't expect to take too long to get
    through it.

    Screwfix sell a 9" angle grinder for 20 quid...

    Friend was cutting some steel plate he had in his garden (half inch thick
    stuff). Borrowed a 9" grinder to do the job.
    First slice took nearly all of a blade.
    The subsequent couple put barely a dent in the next blade. The difference
    was doing it in a series of small passes, doing a couple of mm each pass. I
    think the multipass method may have been quicker too.
    Relevance to your lock? don't press too hard or try to cut too much at once.

    Having had a "An RCD saved my life" (TM) experience I can heartily
    recommend them. For about £10 (Max) you get to tell everyone about the
    day you cut through the mains cable with an angle grinder.

    Do not rely on fuses. They will perform the same function.

    Oh, and do watch your frame. If you slip you'll find that the cutting disc
    will go through your bike frame a lot faster than it will go through the
    lock. If the positioning is precarious it might be worth putting something
    between the bit of the U-lock you are cutting and the bike itself.

    A fuse is there to protect the wiring (for example, from melting), not
    the user - they are far too slow to prevent electrocution. Hence the
    need for an RCD which operates so fast that the shock won't kill you!

    9" has no more "cutting power", but it does have a better reach.
    Don't use a diamond blade - they're for stone.

    No No No - you don't want a diamond blade, you want a metal cutting
    blade (just a thin abrasive). Let teh machine do the work - just rest
    teh blade lightly on the lock, don't press hard.

    Wear all teh protective gear - angle grinders are nasty beasts.

    I'd worry a lot more about the sparks: wear decent eyeprotection and
    don't point the shower of sparks at self, glass or painted surfaces if
    you can help it!

    A visegrip to immobilize the object to be cut works wonders too. And you
    probably don't want to use the plastic grip: grab the head of the
    grinder and rest your fingers on the lock for extra control.

  13. I am pleased to announce the Abus Granite was defeated by a £19.99 900watt
    grinder and a single metal cutting disc in under 10 minutes. As the U
    section of the lock was square shaped I had to cut through both ends, but
    was amased at the speed it went throught it.
    Being young (daft) and impatient I did not use a RCD nor a Bic for that
    matter, but lived to tell the tale.

    Many thanks to all posters. I hope others learned as much as I did.

    Yes, you're right. ISTR that most magazine tests work on a 5 minute
    attempt. I assume the "average" theif won't try for much longer.

  17. I was prepared for a long bloody battle. I even bought 3 spare cutting
    disks. Got a refund on those puppies 🙂 Guess I was lucky that an electical
    outlet was within reasonable distance, thus avoiding the petrol saw job.

    Cutting through the sort of electrical cables one has in a domestic
    setting us not usually dangerous (though don't try this at home).
    What is dangerous is examining the ends of the cut cable, without
    ensuring that the electricity has been isolated first.

    I disagree. Having designed, built and maintained electrical systems
    (up to 33,000V) I do have a fair idea of what I am talking about.

    A fuse (or over current circuit breaker) is provided for a number of
    reasons. One of these is to limit the chances of electrocution if
    there is a live to earth fault, as might happen for a number of
    reasons. The size of the cables and the rating of the protective
    devices are co-ordinated with the type of installation to limit the
    voltage and duration of the electric shock someone will experience
    in such circumstances. It is not possible to eliminate the shock.
    The shock will probably be nasty, but usually not fatal.

    The "fact" that circuit breakers operate rapidly is a common myth,
    but it is just that. A circuit breaker consists of mechanical
    contacts (which are relatively slow to operate) and a tripping
    mechanism, consisting of (rapid acting) magnetic and/or (slow
    acting) thermal elements, which move linkages which operate the
    contacts. This is true whether the circuit breaker is detecting over
    current or leakage current.

    The characteristics of these devices vary in too complicated way to
    describe here. However, the fastest acting protective device in a
    short circuit is a High Breaking Capacity fuse, which is also able
    to break a far higher current than any circuit breaker. That is why
    they are fitted in my fuse boards.

    None of this discussion means that I do not recommend using an RCD
    with power tools. However, they do not protect against all
    electrical faults and it is dangerous to assume that they do.
