  1. I am a slightly overweight, 53 year old male. Up until I was in my
early twenties, I had trouble making it all around a 1/4 mile track. I
attribute this to 3 things -- my general lack of fitness, my weight,
and my poor instinctive coordination. I have been running on and off
for the last 20 something years, having slowly built myself up to about
5 miles. Although my instincts are poor, I have a very good head for
comprehending physical coordination intellectually. My question is
this: if you were to encounter a middle age adult who had never run in
his life, but had walked, so had some muscle development, what
instructions would you give him in order to run most efficiently, e.g.
lean forward, don't lean forward, push off your toes, don't push off
your toes, pull back from the hips, don't pull back from the hips, etc.
    Thanks!

    Uhh, ok.

the reply of someone who spells "replies", "replys" would not be of
    much use, anyway.

"Spell [censored]"? No, actually. See, a [censored] is **female**, and I clearly
stated above that I am **male**. Do you comprehend now? Good boy.
Sheesh, what a group this appears to be. I certainly hope I encounter

I wouldn't tell them anything of the sort. I'd tell him to just go out there,
run and enjoy himself. The best thing for efficiency is frequent practice.

As usual?? We have only just met. If you think I am wrong about having
stated that I am male, you may have a reading comprehension problem. A

Yawn. Another vulgar usenet lowlife who gets his rocks off saying

Your post indicates anything but smarts. And, precisely who is "we"? Do
you think everyone in this group is a vulgar usenet lowlife like you?

You seem to have a lot of animosity. They say that going for a run is
good for that. GIve it a try.

Thank you for the reasonable reply. I was beginning to think I had

Thank you for your reply. I have read 1/2 of Chi Running. I found it
had some good things, but also some obvious errors. For example, he
misdefines foot pronation. He says "lift your feet", but doesn't
specify *how* (e.g. one can flex the knee, the hip, or even extend the
hip), he is ambiguous in his pace recommendation, etc. He claims the
calf muscle is completely uninvolved in running, an obvious error. I
don't really have a problem with his idea of thinking from the center,
but it can be just as beneficial to think about what is happening at
the ankle. I think he thinks he has a panacea, and I think that
thinking is almost always dangerous. I will look at mindful running
    now. :Thanks again.

A fascinating site. Thanks again. I have not gotten halfway through the
site, and have already found 2 apparent disagreements with Chi Running.

" 7. At uniform top speed with zero acceleration, if the athlete was

running in a vacuum with no wind resistance, there would be no
    body lean at all."

Of course body lean is a primary concept of chi running.

    And

"In race walking, the emphasis of the arm is not on the back swing,
(partly because a back swing is going in the opposite direction you are
moving. Rather the focus is the forward thrust of the arm to assist in
moving in the forward direction faster."

Now, I don't know if one can infer that he believes this is true of
running as well, but if he does, this contradicts chi running, where
the emphasis is on the backward thrust of the arms.

More when I finish. Thanks for a great site.
