I finally did 3km in 2 hrs.
Was it due to the drills? Was it due to something else?

Without stopping?
That means you can probably do 5k in 4 hours. Only 3k more to squeeze in.

No.
3 plus 3 is 6.

What does 3 + 3 refer to?
I said if you can do 3k in 2hrs, then you can probably do 5k in 4hrs. 5k
+ 3k is 8k. That means you still have to increase your average speed
enough to squeeze 3k more into 4hrs.
Now you probably feel a lot worse.

Actually, lets do some math i did 4km in 2.75 hrs, so, to do 8km at roughly
that speed is = 5.5 hrs
Now, I did 3km in 2 hrs, using that number, 8km at that speed is = 5.33 hrs

Nope. I feel great, aside from the soreness
Look, you get sore every time you try to work at what for most people
isn't even a warmup pace, or when you go a distance that isn't much
further than a warmup. That means you are out of shape, and you are
planning to swim an 8k in open water in seven months. And now you are
deluding youself into believing that right now you can hold your best
4k pace for 8k.
You may be right, but if you are right, it means you aren't working
hard at all when you swim 4k in 2.75 hours. You can easily swim 4k in
2.75 hours. If that's the case, why are you asking for all this
advice? If you can easily swim 4k in 2.75 hours, then if you put some
effort into it, you can swim 4k in 1.5 hours. Why don't you try that
this weekend? Maybe you can already achieve your goal.
All crawl, no stopping, no hanging on the walls.

For your average person swimming 5 times a week, 2 hrs a day, and not just
doing crawl, what is typical?
All I know is I am getting better. I dont care what I should be at. I care
that I am doing better than I have done before.
For me, any race, or for that matter, any practice, is not about being
first.
It is about being better than I was before. When I was racing, I came in DEAD
last, not last place, BUT, Dead last. I was pitiful at best. Why did I keep
doing it?
In 2 years I went from being a non swimmer to learning how to swim, and in 1
year, loosing 15 seconds off my time.
Yes, That was a while ago, but, that is still the same reason I do things. I
dont care how i measure up. I dont care if it takes me 10 hours to do 8
kilometres. I dont care if it takes longer. I dont set time limits on
things. I set goals of completion. So what if it takes me so long to do it?
Realy, what does it matter? I am enjoying myself. I am getting good
excersise. I am doing something healthy, unlike alot of people my age.
At least I am not lazy, like yourself, and yes, we now have the proof that
you did say that.
Quoted message said:

Actually most of the time, acheiving 2.5km in 2hrs, it isnt at breakneck
speeds. I sometimes push hard, like the 3km, or not quite so, 1.7km in 2
hrs. Sometimes it is just to relax, others, it is to burn of energy (anger,
annoyance, ... better than using my fists.)

Sure. I will ensure that i take a week off work. To push myself that hard, I
would not be able to move the next day. If I ever got good enough to
actually be competitive, I would take a few days off work after the meet for
rest and recouperation.

In a pool I natually stop. That is part of the problem of pool swimming.

you're wrong.

I'm an average person. I'm an average masters swimmer. At age 56, if I

water in under three hours.

Martin is innumerate.
The most glaring example I can think of is that "1500 is a sprint" business,
when he claimed that doing a WR at this distance was a once-in-a-lifetime
thing, and then all the names and times of the 1500 WR's got posted that
showed he was wrong. After that he said, in essence, "no, I didn't mean what
I posted, what I meant was since the WR went under 15 minutes".
Which was worse, because the facts showed that since the times went under 15
minutes the WR holder was even _more_ likely to repeat multiple times.
The he started calling people names again.

In this case however, he's probably right that Artindale's max distance per
hour probably cannot be simply doubled in two hours given his current level
of fitness and apparent 'training cojones'. Martin didn't show his work in
this problem, but appears to have arrived at the the correct answer.
Given the volume of RSS traffic over Artindale's quandries this past week, I
think we need something else to write/read about...

My math is a lot closer to correct than yours. If you think you can
double your best 4k time and use that as your estimate for an 8k time,
you're wrong.
We are not talking about right now, we are talking about 6 months. Who realy
knows what will happen in 6 months.

isn't even a warmup pace, or when you go a distance that isn't much
further than a warmup. That means you are out of shape, and you are
planning to swim an 8k in open water in seven months. And now you are
deluding youself into believing that right now you can hold your best
4k pace for 8k.For your average person swimming 5 times a week, 2 hrs a day, and not
just
Quoted message said:Quoted message said:doing crawl, what is typical?
I'm an average person. I'm an average masters swimmer. At age 56, if I
could train 5x2hrs per week, in seven months I could go 8k in open
water in under three hours.
Martin, I have a challenge. Before the end of the month, go to your local
pool and do 8 km. Report back to us on how long it took. Also, the day
after, report on how you feel.

In 2 years I went from being a non swimmer to learning how to swim, and

It usually takes a few lessons to learn to swim, maybe 20 one-hour
lessons over a summer. It took you two years? Why did it take that
long? What are we dealing with here?
It took me 1 year to learn crawl, and do it in 59 seconds, actually about 4
months, 3 times a week for a hr each practice.
The next year it was honing it so that i could bring it to 45 seconds.

You may be right, but if you are right, it means you aren't working
hard at all when you swim 4k in 2.75 hours.Actually most of the time, acheiving 2.5km in 2hrs, it isnt at breakneck
speeds. I sometimes push hard, like the 3km, or not quite so, 1.7km in 2
hrs. Sometimes it is just to relax, others, it is to burn of energy
(anger,

You're saying you were pushing hard to finish 3k in 2hrs. That's 2.4
seconds per meter. You are 25 years old. You are in the prime of your
athletic life. Do you have a muscle problem?
I may be in the typical prime, but I am improving every day/week/month. I
have yet to hit any peak. I dont have a muscle problem. I have a
disadvantage. I learned how to swim almost 10 years later than you.

The most glaring example I can think of is that "1500 is a sprint"
business,
when he claimed that doing a WR at this distance was a

under

minutes the WR holder was even _more_ likely to repeat multiple times. The he started calling people names again.
In this case however, he's probably right that Artindale's max distance
per
Quoted message said:hour probably cannot be simply doubled in two hours given his current
level
Quoted message said:of fitness and apparent 'training cojones'.
Well, anyone could say that about almost anyone's swimming.
Quoted message said:Martin didn't show his work in
this problem, but appears to have arrived at the the correct answer.
Um, he started by saying 3 + 3 was 5, then when that was pointed out to not
be so, he said "no, I meant that 3 means 5, and if you want to get 8 then
you have to add 3 more". Nobody mentioned 8 until he did - check the
thread.

The 8 comes in with regard to Artindale's goal of the 8Km lake swim,
mentioned elsewhere by Artindale.
Martin's response to Artindale's 3Km news was:
"That means you can probably do 5k in 4 hours. Only 3k more to squeeze in"
Again, assuming Artindale can do 3Km in 1 hour, its reasonable to assume
that over 2 hours (given his present shape) he can get to 5Km. You know
swimming, and are a smart guy, so you know this is more probable than 6Km in
2 hours. His goal of 8Km with a projected current ability of 5Km is Martin's
3Km.
Not getting into a pissing match - don't want to tread on Smith's toes, just
answering your question.
