2007 Campy Crank...

  1. Looks like Campy is on the outboard bearing bus finally, with its own spindle design (hurth coupling rather than solid)...Finally the big men of the peloton that ride Campy can put the power to the wheel without all that waste of the square taper. No more excuses for: Boonen, Pettachi, Bettini, Valverde, Backsteadt, etc. 😉

    To be fair, when he was riding Campy he wasn't trying to do so with a broken knee cap.

    It seems like a pretty solid system overall (I can't wait to see it in silver), but that bearing retainer clip on the right cup looks like a clumbsy afterthought.

  5. Trying to fix things that aren't broken....marketing hype IMHO. I love Campy stuff, but I think this new crankset is a bit absurd....there were (are) no problems with their square taper design.

    The Square spindle design allowed Campy to use larger bearings. The only thing I like about the new design is that it will make it easier to find a Record 10 Carbon crankset for less than $300.... I agree, marketing hype...

    Depends on how often you remove your cranks. I know there are people out there who swear the corners on the shaft don't wear but there are plenty who say they do (I'm one of those). Its also easier to remove a crank without the need for specialised tools.

    Two good reasons for the change IMO.

    FSA makes self-extracting bolts for square taper BBs as well as for ISIS/Octalink ... you can certainly use the threaded retaining rings from a set of self-extracing bolts intended for an ISIS or Octalink spindle and subsitute non-extracting 8mm HEX bolts, too.

    Yeah I know, my point is that despite all the energy transfer losses that are attributed to a "flexy" square taper, it doesn't (or in Petacchi's case didn't) seem to have any noticeable effect on performance, even for larger riders like Boonen and Backsteadt, who put out as many watts as a trackie.

    Agreed but marketing drives the world... besides just because it isn't broken doesn't mean you can't make it better.

    Hey, I will be the first to tell you that I don't believe you gain much over the square taper, but I still have a dura-ace crankset on my otherwise Campy rig just because I do believe it is better, even if unnecessary.

    Yeah but it is still a PITA, and besides a crank removal tool is only like $15 so self extacting bolts don't make any difference to me.

    I agree, I happen to swap the same Dura-Ace crankset from my road racing bike to my TT bike because it allows me to only have 1 $400 crankset in 180mm length and one set of pedals. It takes like 1 minute tops to swap, but more important than time, it is easy, and causes little or no wear to do 2 times/ month. I would never do that with the old style cranks, self extracting bolts or not.

    Excuse my ignorance but how do you do that? Dura ace chain rings and derailleur as well?

    Do what run Dura Ace with Campy? It all works the same, there is no issue at all. My TT bike has Shim stuff, and my Road bike is ALL campy except the crankset. I interchange the wheels too.

    People are too anal about what works and what doesn't. I have a tandem with Campy 10 speed shifters, and DA 9 speed cassette and derailleur, no problems at all, shifts perfectly. Now that both Campy and Shim are 10 speed, you can run a Shim Cassette with Campy derailleur or whatever combo you want since the spacing is so close (only like .02mm different).

    Worth pointing out that everyone has a different idea of what 'works perfectly', as evidenced on the first few miles of any race. Some are happy to grind along with a soundtrack of mechanical torture, and some prefer the only sound to be the swish of tyres on tarmac. As they say, 'results may vary'. :-)
    Definitely no problem running Shimano cranks with a Campag setup though - except the fact the DA crankset is just so damn ugly!

    You'll also notice that those guys are all using alloy cranks because getting the right length is worth a lot more than saving some flex and going to carbon.
