Headset Question

Huh? I have an old headset that has a "wedge" washer on the top, perhaps
that is stuck to the steerer tube?

remove "mydebt" to reply

Take a mallet and hit the steerer tube while the frame
is held and the front wheel is off the ground by at least 6 inches.

Sounds like someone forgot to grease that steerer tube
and headset.. Also the races too.

There's a compression washer on top that's probably doing its
job. It's the one that has a split on it. Pry it with a small pointed
object.

Get a rubber mallet and really wail on the steerer a couple of times until
is moves an inch or so. Then, with the wheel in the fork, push down hard on
the floor. This should unseat the wedge ring. Then you can usually slide
it right off and pull the fork out the bottom.

to...that would just be...ne'er mind...

Yup,

It's one of the ones with a wedge ring. Before inflicting more violence on the
top of the steerer tube, I wanted to check that I wasn't missing something. And
the consensus seems to be, hit it hard enough to slide the wedge. I'll give a
go tonight.
