The handlebar stem might not be compatible with the diameter of the bars
you get, also you might want a different length or rise stem anyway. Most
stems for flat bars have a clamp diameter of 25.4mm. You can still get
25.4 drops but most of the good ones are at least 25.8 or 26.0. Cables
/might/ be the wrong length as well (but cross that bridge if and when you
get to it).

There could be a complication with the front derailleur if it's one
designed for an indexed Shimano MTB shifter. I understand "Road" STI
shifters aren't compatible. If that's the case, maybe the derailleur
could be replaced or a different front shifter used, eg. down tube or bar
end type.

Don't forget the bar tape.

You also need to check your stem handlebar clamp diameter; "flat" bars are
often smaller than drops. Could mean a new stem, in effect. Don't forget to
check that the STI levers you get are going to be compatible with the gears
on your bike.

Thanks for the help. will get the bars and the levers and then see what else needs changing. was just making sure that the cost wouldnt rapidly escalate

Just to add to my point about the stem, 25.8 or 26.0 bars may *seem* to
fit a 25.4 stem but I don't think it's safe practice to use that
combination.
