I have a newer steel cross frame with 130mm rear drop-out spacing that I'd
like to put an older 6 speed (120mm) freewheel in. Can I safely "force" the
spacing in on the frame to fit this more narrow rear hub? The 6 speed
cassette will be my primary gearing choice, but I may swap it out
occasionally for a 9 speed wheel now and again. Thanks for any help!

was 120mm. Are you sure your's is 120mm?I think you'd be better off using spacers on your 6-sp hub than to force it
into the 130mm dropouts.Art Harris

It would be more sensible to leave the frame as it is and use a longer axle
for your wheel, placing spacers on the non-drive side and centring the rim
to the hubshell.

into the 130mm dropouts.Seconded. Just add spacers. While you're at it, I would make the wheel
dishless - there should be enough space. You *may* need a longer BB
to keep the chainline perfect. -

hub.

hub 130mm...easy to do.
