I finally saw one for real last week and it is truly a beautiful bike.
BUT I can't find anything out about it. No rider comments, reviews -
nothing. If you go onto the Trek website, there's no link to the page
it's on; I had to find it through google.
Quality urban bike with mountain type gears; see also Cannondale Bad Boy
Ultra and 1FG. The 1FG is interesting as a manufactured-as-such single
speed (one f***ing gear). Designed for relatively short sprints rather
than long, steady rides. Target market is (I think) young-and-trendy
urbanites. Based on courier's bikes, although I'd be surprised if many
working couriers spent this sort of money on a bike. The suspension on
the Cannondales is short-travel road suspension; I suspect the Trek
will be too (although it is interesting that it has lockout).
I agree it appears to be a copy of the Bad Boy, of which I possess the
original model (slightly heavier frame, no suspension) and would not
do without. For my commute in and out of Cambridge, including short
cut through a couple of fields, it really does the business: plenty
fast enough for me on the roads and able to carry that speed onto the
bridlepaths. It has also been used for many longer rides at weekends.
And the matt black paint is nicely anonymous in the Cambridge cycle
racks....
I was told it was supposed to be a "courier culture bike" and that it
was intended for owners to buy a second set of wheels, equipped for
off-road, the idea being that you commuted to work on it in the week
on tarmac and rode on dirt at the weekends.
It is not a pretty bike, but it does what I want it to very well.
