FLOAT - What Is It Exactly???

Float is the turn, or twist you can turn your foot without unclipping from
the pedal. The more float, the more lateral movement you have for your foot
without unclipping. Less float, the tighter the fit from cleat to pedal.

There's rotational float and lateral float. Some pedals have both.
Rotational float is the number of degrees from straight-ahead you can
twist your foot without either unclipping completely or meeting stiff
resistance. Lateral float is how much your foot can slip sideways when
clipped in.

The theory is that float is better for dodgy knees, because some people
have feet that tend to twist during a pedal revolution. Locking the
feet firmly in place puts the twist on the knee instead. Personally I
don't need it. I did have dodgy knees once (VMO inhibition) but after
doing the recommended exercise for a few weeks the problem has never
come back.
