Wheel Recommendations?

  1. I need to get a new pair of wheels for my road/racing bike. I weigh
    about 180-185 pounds and I will need to use them primarily on city
    streets (e.g. streets in Chicago that can range from good to average).
    I have hit some fairly large potholes in the past, but none have
    caused any significant damage to the wheels. I will be using the
    wheels for training, intermittent racing, and light touring (if I can
    ever get out of the city onto some nice country roads).

    I'm looking for a good lightweight wheel that is also strong. I've
    narrowed it down to the Mavic Open Pro, Mavic CXP-33, and the Velocity
    Aerohead. Which one of these would work best for my application?
    Also, I remember hearing about the Open Pro being a "noisy" wheel--is
    this still true?

    And given my weight and desired usage, how many spokes should I get in
    the front and rear?

    My opinion? Open Pro, 36 hole, laced 3X. Very strong and sturdy. Should be
    able to do the triple duty you need at a very reasonable cost.

    I think for your use you would use 36 spoke CXP33 or Aeroheads. They should
    build some very strong wheels. This of course assumes a good wheel builder.

    Try the speedcific hubs they are the smoothest hubs I have ever used.
    Similar to American Classic hubs but cheaper. Easy to take apart and clean.

    All the wheel are priced excellent.

    My opinion? Open Pro, 36 hole, laced 3X. Very strong and sturdy. Should be

    Since you mentioned light touring, I would add velocity Fusion to your list.

    If you use Aeroheads, I would do 36 on the rear(touring), 32 front, Revspokes
    in front for any choice of rim.

    OpenPros continue to be our 'distant second' choice due to it's many noise
    problems. CXP-33 are nice but overpriced IMO, I think Fusions are a better and
    cheaper choice.

    Fusion or CXP-33-32 both ends, Revolutions in the front. Aeroheads, 32 front/36
    rear.

  8. do they still have this problem? i thought it was pretty much fixed - i
    haven't had any issues with an open pro i bought last year. much more
    mileage than the one it replaced before /that/ thing started making one
    heck of a racket.

    see how wheel deflection is unaffected by spoke tension?

    all excess tension achieves is the unreliability problems you've just
    described. mavic recommended tension is ~100 kgf.

    there are countless threads that repeat this misconception here all the
    time. fact is, tension does /not/ increase strength of either spoke or
    rim. damon's deflection chart proves that. tension needs to be what
    the rim manufacturer recommends and no more.

    Inadequate tension results in the wheel going out of true. I put
    a considerable load on the wheel, which means I need a lot of
    tension to keep the spokes from going slack. But I do not taco
    the wheel during building -- or get that malignant wave, so I am
    not over the limit. All of this is simply to say that I am not
    ripping the spokes out during the build process, and that they
    are getting ripped out during normal riding. This should not
    happen. Both rims were anodized. -- Jay Beattie.

    here's the crux of the issue. if it's a lateral load, you can easily
    make any spoke go completely slack, regardless of tension, so there has
    to ba a practical limit to how high you want tension to be in order to
    defeat the indefeatable.

    are you using a tensiometer while building? if the rim manufacturer
    specifies a maximum tension and you exceed it, you /are/ going to have
    reliability problems. it's because you're operating the component
    closer to it's yield point, and the closer to yield, the shorter the
    fatigue life.

    the chances are, the anodizing is irrelevant. there is no definitive
    causal relationship between anodizing and cracking if the cracks do not
    emanate from anodizing defects - which is almost always the case in the
    failures i've examined. yes, anodizing /can/ cause cracking, but it's
    unlikely to show itself in the presence of other much more significant
    failure sources.

    truth is, anodizing protects against pitting. pitting is a major
    failure initiator. pitting is often caused by chloride salts. sweat is
    loaded with these salts, as are slushy roads in snowy states.

    i believe the problems you've had are avoidable. use a tensiometer.
    the $50 park tool is perfectly adequate, and for that money, it's a
    cheap insurance against expensive repeated rim failures.

    If I want a 36h box section rim _now_, my choices are Mavic, Mavic, and
    Mavic. Same reason I use Continental tyres.

    .... that said, the same LBS sold me a 48h Weinmann concave rim, we'll see
    how that holds up.

    CXP-33 actually have sockets inserted(they can be replaced) instead of
    traditional eyelets found on the OpenPro.

    These tighten when building the wheel, no noise in CXP-33-nice rim but
    expensive.
