Titanium cogs spark when shifting

  1. I was watching the shifts on the trainer and noticed a spark when the
    chain snapped past a tooth. Cog is titanium (Dura-Ace 9s). Kinda cool!

    That would almost make time spent on the hamster wheel worthwile -- almost.
    Wonder if Shimano will begin to recommend a frame mounted fire extinguisher
    for Dura-Ace use indoors.

  4. no, i've seen these cogs spark too. i do a bit of night riding in the
    winter and i watched a friend mash a shift on a grade. it's not like a
    shower of sparks, but definitely a strike.

    if it's a shimano chain, it reinforces sheldon's advice about pushing
    the rivet in from the left, not the right so the slightly protuberant
    broken side of the rivet does not cause any issues, this being one.

    2004 Shimanoâ groupset. To put out fires on the 2004 groupset owners must
    buy the 2004 model. A nozzle upgrade kit is available to make the Shimanoâ
    2003 extinguisher compatible with 2004 Shimanoâ fires. Shimanoâ 2004 fire
    extinguishers are not backwards compatible with older Shimanoâ fires.
    Shimanoâ fires can only be put out with genuine Shimanoâ fire extinguishers.

    When you see the funny "a" with a hat on, that's meant to be a Registered
    symbol. It didn't work to well when I cut and pasted it from the Shimano
    website.

    FWIW, titanium golf clubs make sparks when they hit grains of sand.

    Actually, titanium is known for giving off big, fat sparks when contacted
    hard- so much so that people use ti blocks on the bottom of cars as scrape
    plates with the intention of getting just that effect, (now, why would one
    want big sparks flying off the bottom of their car? Got me on that one...).
    On the other hand, I don't think that all the cogs on a stock 9 are ti.

  12. Not correct - the shower of sparks seen when the bottom of a Formula type
    sports car rubs on the pavement is from the titanium rub strips used to
    protect the carbon fiber tub.

    As I cogitate further on this matter (over a cup of columbias finest, of
    course), it occurs to me that using ti as a non-sparking tool may have to do
    with the temp. and duration of the spark created. So using ti pucks on a
    crotchrocket jockeys knees results in a satisfying fireworks display of
    low-temp sparks less likely to ignite vapors than that of some other metals.

    Too..much..caffeine..must ride now or risk spontaneous self-combustion..

    It seems I never go the full story on this one. Nevertheless, it would
    be cool to have sparking cassette - good for those night rides!

    and explain the error of their ways. This is not a new technology.

    A bit o' reading shows these advertised as being " encased in a shroud of
    pure Titanium". Thats one nasty piece of false advertising if you're right.
    However, a quick web search shows ti used in similar apps, such as sparkers
    for low riders, (weird world isn't it?)

    Well, yes. You see, the reason you need reduced sparking tools in a
    volatile environment isn't to stop the dread phenomena of spotaneous
    sparkage (as a side note: this was a frequent occurence at Dead shows..),
    it's to limit the spark that occurs when objects come into contact, ie, ti
    cog plus chain, or knee puck and asphalt. Sooo, since we're not talking
    about electrical discharge here, whether the ti cog is tossing out tiny
    chunks of his chain, or vise-versa, just as the ti-pucks are flinging off
    burning little bits of asphalt, sparkage is done happenin'.

    Perhaps they should actually be selling the tools as "reduced spark"
    technology. Maybe its the whole new crusade that could really give Nader a

    We use non-sparking tools for working with hydrogen but they have a bronze
    colour. They're definitely much harder and stronger than bronze. Are you
    sure the titanium isn't alloyed with something to take the spark out of it?
