  1. I live in the worthless expanse of land known as the midwest where every
warm spring day comes with 10-20 mph winds that seem to change direction
so that I am always riding into a headwind. The faster you ride, the
stronger the resistance, it's almost deafening, all I want to do is
relax with a nice brisk ride without all of that racket. I sincerely
    hate this place.

So what can I do to improve this situation? I ride in the drops, my back
is almost parallel to the ground, my head down as much as possible. I
don't want to get aero bars because I mostly ride besides fast traffic
(another benefit of living in this wasteland). Would deep aero wheels be
    of any benefit?

Ari, it's windy as hell here in Texas at this time of year, so if you want
to get away from the wind, you can't move here. Yesterday, gusts of wind
hit me and nearly blew me down sideways 4 different times. Give it some
time and the weather will settle down--to just plain hot!

I went for a 39 mile ride today and am just worn out from battling the wind.
But, you know what? it'll make us stronger! Next time you are getting
discouraged, think of that. Riding 39 miles in the wind is like riding,
what--50 miles without the wind. So, it's actually helping!

I spent 11 years in SE Michigan and still savor freedom from the
    midwest every day.

The noise in your ears is going to increase as the wind rushing
past them goes faster. Aero wheels will make you go faster and
therefore increase the noise you hear. The noise of your non-aero
wheels is not significant compared to the wind blowing past your
head. A better way would be to experiment with different helmets to
find the one with the least wind noise.

Oh ... by all means. A good, deep set of rims is just what you need for
    windy conditions ... NOT!

Sounds like you need to move. And with your attitude towards the midwest,
they might just appreciate it if you did. I grew up in Oklahoma and Kansas.
I loved it there ... but I wasn't into cycling then. Not sure I could ever
have gotten into it there. The wind in Spring in Oklahoma is pretty awful.

    Would you believe earplugs? I used them all the time on my motorcycle;
the attenuation of important noises is not so much as to be dangerous,
but given the wearying effect persistent noise can have on people, I'll
bet you would find your rides much more relaxing.

I'm partial to 3M orange tapered ear plugs, as they seem to go into my
    ears easily.

Come to the northeast where we have slightly less wind, and a lot
    more hills to climb.

I've noticed a marked reduction in wind noise on cold days when I use
a headband that completely covers my ears. There's a couple here:
    http://www.gearlink.com/en-us/dept_243.html by Assos and Castelli.
They might be a little warm on the Big Flat, but perhaps you could rig
up something from a single layer of Lycra.

I am sure that you have already done this but I eliminated a lot of wind
noise by tightening my helmet strap.
