  1. Some people might remember "Mr +Mrs Average" who are more concerned with
sacking people and what to have for tea than trivial things than the speed
limit. I missed it earlier, but today she hits back:

Note to letters editor, "sighted", hollier" and "your honest" seem to have
eluded your otherwise excellent journalistic craftsmanship ;-)

Check my bible? - oops I haven't got one!

    BEGINS

With reference to my critics, I feel I must make two points.

Firstly, I hope they don't listen to the car radio or CD player while
driving, indulge in any conversation whatsoever with passengers or have ever
had to listen to a three-year-old child desperately needing the toilet when
stuck in traffic in the middle of town. Get real, for goodness sake!

Secondly, hand on heart, how many people when driving in a 30 or 40 mph zone
have checked the speedo to find that their speed has actually crept up by
three, four or even five miles an hour. If your honest it's happened to all
    of us.

Speed cameras are sighted in the best areas to catch the most people. I'm
sorry to say it's not about safety, it's about money.

To all those hollier-than-thou people, check your Bible. I'm sure it says
something about "Let he who has not sinned..." I rest my case.

    Julia Kent,

    Cliff Top Lane,

    Hessle.

Mrs Average really, really shouldn't be driving, should she. She is a
self-confessed danger on the roads who allows her toddler to dictate whether or
not she is in control of her vehicle and is unable to control her speed and
thinks it is acceptable to be that way and she thisnks it's safe. She is an
utter and complete [censored]. Sterilisation is a word that comes to mind... :-/

    :-/

I like the "my critics" line - it's like "my public" or "my people" :-)

Anyway, the reply I sent admits my own failings in public - I feel much
better now, it must have been weighing on my conscience ;-)

"Ms Kent is correct when she says that people daydream when on the roads (19
MAY 04), only the other day I cycled past an Indian takeaway and spent a few
moments having thoughts about curries. The difference is that had I been
cautioned for careless cycling, I would not try and get out of it by using
the excuse that my mind was elsewhere and in any case since everyone does it
I should be let off. I'd would pay the fine as I was guilty.

As for her comments about speed cameras being sited to make money, I'm sure
she agrees that we pay far too much money to the Government and police
anyway in the form of income tax, NI, council tax, fuel tax, VAT on fuel
tax, road fund licence and so on. The answer is simple, don't give the
police any more of your hard earned cash than they already get, it's your
money - keep it in your purse - don't break the law.

As for the Biblical quote about the stone throwing business, I'm afraid I
don't own a Bible, but when I was forced to read it against my will at
school, I think it had a bit in it that said the Earth was flat, so I
trended not to take much notice of it after that."

Not sure that's actually true... but there are some pretty appalling things
in there that are always good to bring up in this kind of situation. I'll
look up some references for you later if you like, but for now I have to go
out (not on my bike, alas - though I did manage to fit in a most enjoyable
    30 mile pootle earlier).

I like the bit about enslaving your neighbours. I've always wanted to try
that. As for the bit about "not suffering a witch to live" I have a few

Silly woman. Speed cameras are about stopping people like her driving
like she does. It is about picking off the people who are so focussed
on what's going on inside their car, or have such warped priorities that
they cause accidents by neglect and carelessness. And THAT'S safety.

Recently there have been a number of politicians banging on about how
'cameras should only be put in accident black spots'. This is an
    insidious and dangerous doctrine
    (1) Drivers should drive legally _all_ the time.
    (2) The sooner the careless ones become car-less the sooner we'll all be
protected from their 'I can get away with it' attitude which kills and
injures many innocent people every day.

We must never lose sight of the fact that what is safe an appropriate should
dictate the law - not the other way round.

How about the biblical blessing for genocide:
"Blessed is he who taketh the children of the heathen,
and casts them upon the stone"?

Or to be even more topical, the biblical suicide bomber Samson?

Hmmm. If you want to discuss this philosophical point I'm happy to do
    so:-

I would say that the law is a very blunt an inefficient tool for
implementing safety. The first trouble is that it is practically
impossible to legislate for fools and knaves. The second trouble is
that there are so many circumstances that don't fall properly into
    convenient legal categories.

The highway code gives pretty pictures of hand signals (I know the HC
isn't the actual law) but it is often a great deal safer to keep hands
on the bars/brakes and indicate by position. - Sometimes it is
    sometimes it isn't.

It isn't the law that you should never pass a lorry on the inside but it
is incredibly unsafe to do so. What good would making a law do? What
purpose does the possibility of a legal penalty of say £20 matter to
somebody who is prepared to risk being squashed?

So comparing safety with law is like comparing Mozart with Shakespeare.

The point I was making in my original post was that the legal (not the
moral) duty of motorists, which is a definite thing can be used as a
sort of touch stone to discover carelessness. I think most people would
say that everyone has a moral duty of care to their fellows, but if you
start judging morally you fall into biblical hogwash trap that Mrs
    Average so obligingly demonstrated.

You'll gather that I chose my words with care; though I occasionally
    mistakes make.

Sounds like a typical speedophile excuse for driving above the speed limit
    "when conditions allow".

    The biblical quotes are here:
    http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/edn-c015.html

Last time I studied geometry I thought that a "circle" was a two
dimensional figure (i.e. flat), these people seem to have deduced a three
dimensional sphere from the word "circle".

I like the quote on the end:

"When the Bible touches on scientific subjects, it is entirely accurate"

In that case, why did it take the Pope 350 odd years to admit Galileo was
right? Presumably the Pope reads the Bible now and again and would have been
able to prove Galileo wrong by using his scientific knowledge gained from
    reading it ;-)

Yup. That's why the law dictates a 30 mph limit in built up areas.

Every single one I've ever seen. But I've only read it in four languages out of
all the possibilities, and none of those four was hebrew or greek.

I have neither bible nor concordance handy, but it's in the OT and it's to do
with making a vessel which is round, and exactly one cubit across, and exactly
    three cubits around the rim.

The proof that heaven is hotter than hell is also amusing.

And a quick Google will turn up plenty of pages showing that firstly there
is little reason to take this as an exact measurement, and secondly if you
allow to the thickness of the material and design of the rim it is in fact
entirely possible to have a bowl with those measurements.

That is perfectly possible. I really don't see what your problem is, unless
of course you are making assumptions that are not necessarily correct.

Yes, but that was before they introduced ETRTO measurements.
