I haven't found any definitive info saying that they are, but I haven't found anything solid to suggest that one manufacturer's square taper is different to another's.
Anyone know whether different manufacturers' square taper BBs and cranks are interchangeable?

If you're desparate, yes. If you're doing the job properly, and don't want to wreck a crank, no. There's at least 2 types of taper that I'm aware of, JIS(Jap Industry Std) and ISO. They also come in different lengths, and even two bottom brackets with the same taper and length can be different, as they can have different offsets from L->R. Then there's different BB threadings... Easiest to stick to the same manufacturer and length, otherwise find the numbers printed on it and match it to another brand...... Sorry! Gemma

Aside from the obviously different lengths available (usually somewhere from 107 to 127 mm), there are other differences.
For sealed units, you need to know the shell width (68, 70 or 73 mm) and thread (English or Italian).
There's also the more subtle difference in the taper size between the ISO and JIS standards. This effects the fit of the crank.
I'd expect the "norm" here to be 68 mm shell, English thread, JIS taper.

From my experience, I have learned that swapping BB's and cranks from different manufacturers causes a lot of angst and unhappiness. The main problem being the different axle lengths and crank offsets causing things not to line up. The front derailleur may not cover the distance to the chain rings or a chainring may not clear the stay. There are other problems too. Try and stick with one manufacturer.
Do that means do it. Any excuse to buy more tools is a good excuse. ; ) Fraser
especially power tools....😉
Chuckle. {:-).
I have had TA cranks for about 30 years and have about 5 different crank extractors to match the various axles I've used over the years on everything from a K-mart pre-used (given) to a MTB. So you are warned.
Unfortunately, I have not found a way to incorporate power tools {:-(.
Actually, that reminds me, I'm learning to use a lather and milling machine at TAFE, so must put a few custom axles (length and clearance) on the foreign orders list {:-)
Having jsut gone down the upgrade path meself (Veloce to Chorus triple makes me wonder why manufacturers dont make just ONE BB that you ca adjust to suit whatever length you want (i have seen reference to hig end units that are capable of this; Royce and some other name tha escapes me...

I forgot to mention that I already knew about the different lengths and offsets but I wasn't sure about the actual size and shape of the taper.
Anyway, thanks all for the responses, even if it wasn't the answer I was looking for 🙂
