I'm used to my Mega 9 rear shifter to downshift when I push with my thumb. I just bought an NRS1 with an 04 XT derailleur/shifter and it upshifts when I push with my thumb. Is this a change from the manu or did my LBS just get it wrong? Or is it just a preferrence setting?

You're hosed. It's a low-normal derailer. Hope you aren't too particular about that sort of thing.

It's particular to the derailleur. The spring pulls in a different way. To get it back to the old style, you'll need to change out the rear derailleur.
Man, some people prefer the low-normal (also called Rapid-Rise) to the regular deraileur. When you suddenly have to start climbing hard and you have to downshift, they can be very handy, since it is generally more difficult for a deraileur to move to a bigger cog under pressure. The Rapid-Rise spring makes this much easier for the deraileur. You may really start to love it. You'll just have to get used to the reverse action. On the plus side, now your front and rear deraileurs match in their shifting action -- thumb for downshift and index finger for up.

Sounds like you wrote the Shimano marketing material. With a high-normal derailer I can use my thumb when things get mucky. The spring is not strong enough to overcome muckiness.

Exactly. When I need a lower gear - REALLY need a lower gear, that spring just isn't going to do the job. I'll have to soft-pedal s stroke to get a shift (just when I don't need to be doing that).
That's the reason I liked the Sachs "reverse" front derailleur - spring tension pulled the derailleur out (toward the big ring), and cable tension (lots of it if necessary) pulled it toward the granny. The other nice thing is that a reverse front derailleur is in the right position for adjustment without any funky little plastic thing holding it there.
