  1. Specs of derailleurs say that particular derailleur is for 8 or 9 speed.
Does it have to be strictly followed?
I did buy my bike (Giant Yukon) in LBS, but I ask to put XT at rear.
Yukon is 8 speed bike but guy put me M750 which is 9 speed.
Was he wrong?. I don't think so because everything works fine.

Well then, you already know the answer. You can thank the shop when or
if you upgrade to 9 speed.

Yes, almost all Shimano rear derailleurs are interchangeable with each
    other - 6, 7, 8, 9 speeds, both road and mountain.

Not quite right there Phil - the wheels on 6 sp and maybe 7 sp too are too
wide for a 9 sp chain.

Now this is what you get for speedreading again. He is absolutely correct,
since we are discussing derailleurs. So are you in a way, but you're
answering a different question. Plus you seem a little confused today. I
didn't know that the wheels were any wider, I just thought it was the cogs
    on the cassette 😉

Nope! The jockey wheels are wider, as is the cage to accommodate said and
the wider chain. Narrow chain will tend to fall off the jockey and jam
between it and the cage plates. TRUST me I KNOW this!

Confused today? No more than usual mate ',;~}~

You didn't say jockey wheels. You said wheels which I normally call the big
things with tires on them 😉
Plus the discussion is still about derailleurs so wheel size has nothing to
    do with it.
You really mean you have to live with yourself in that state everyday. Wow.

Hey Shaun... I of course covered my ass with the "almost all" phrasing 😉
Most people wouldn't try the 6, 7 der on 9sp and would probably opt to go
the other way around... 8 or 9 sp on a 6 or 7 sp.

Yeah, he was wrong. You should be riding a singlespeed.

    You know KMA.
    WTF your problem is?

  12. Wrong but it will work. I have a 8 speed XT I put on my
K2 / Proflex 2000. When you get the cash you will only need
9 speed shifters and a 9 speed chain.

Finally. I found my bike. Now if I don't lose it again I'll be off to do a 2
day mountain trip in Norway. On the roadbike this time, but I will keep my
eyes open for offroad opportunities of which there are plenty I know.
