Don't the Deore 6-speed levers have a friction setting? I'm not good on
this subject- I always ran Suntour.

Be careful, man...MY FrankenFisherHardtail was stolen about 6 months ago,
despite being ugly, cheap, and barely functional. Guess thieves don't know
the difference.

Depends on the shifters. My old XT thumbies had a small switch on the top
for switching to friction mode. If you have to ask though, I'm guessing
you don't have that option. So perhaps pulling them apart and pulling out
the ratchet system(?)

If you don't have the little switch that slides to from index to friction, you
might be able to dissassemble them, but it's kinda tricky.

The "clicks" caused by a small ball bearing (very small) that settles into
detents on a disc. On the older Suntour shifters, you could flip the disc over,
so the ball just pressed on the smooth surface instead of the detents, and
you'd end up with the sweetest smoothest friction thumbie ever. Not sure if
works the same on the Shimano, but if you're not married to the shifters, it
might be worth a shot.

[For those interested, '99 Fisher supercaliber frame, new Tange rigid
fork, new seatpost, new BB, new headset, scrounged everything else. The
key find was the Avid brakes and levers a buddy of mine was getting rid
of since he upgraded to disc brakes. It is pornographic to ride, to say

find the worn out Ground Controls (at least thats what they look like)?
You don't have the lever on your thumb shifter to switch to friction?
Could've been broken off. Anyway a shifter disassembly should show you
the offending detents . A little creative Dremel work, or strategically
located washer(s) should fix you up.

Notice, the slider with one position labeled SIS. And then notice
that I have it in the other position.

Been pimping around town on this frankenbike for years. It's my big-
deal StumpJumper from the early 90's. Fruitcake-pink, but it's thinwall
steel, and it came with some pretty good stuff on it for less than $1000
more than 10 years ago. Came with a set of The XT Thumbies®. They aren't
on the bike. I keep them in a safe (undisclosed) location.

Oh Hell No. These are crappy plastic POS [censored] 6-speed shifters. Sounds like
a disassembly job to me. Now, the happy Happy Suntours, they do that. But,
alas, they aren't here yet.

No [censored]. It's already a little creaky, which means I'm going to go over the
whole thing with my torque wrench [again] and make sure it's totally spec. Might
even re-install the BB with teflon tape. It's a commuter bomb, so hopefully I
won't be doing 4' drops with it.

Thanks...but to be honest, that was one of my rooms at my dad's house...the
whole upstairs was mine, so, you know, bikes and TV in one room, bed and
such in another.

Though, now that I have a house just off campus, my bikes are in the living
room about 6 feet from the kitchen. I can smell the rotten ass stinking mud
while I make breakfast.

I believe your setback is the "wife" quotient - college kids have no such
problem. Not that that's a problem, per se, but hey...usually it's the
woman or the ride. I'm in college - there are lots of women 🙂

Reality is for folks that can't afford hallucinogenics.

My sad reality is that this 6-speed shifter is truly a POS, having
neither the selector nub nor the 'tiny ball' to do its bidding. It has
but a crappy piece of plastic that slides along notches on the inside of
the shifter.

The answer?

Use the left-hand shifter on the right hand side, turned upside down.
