Hello all,
While I took swimming lessons as a child, I never was into
swimming as a form of exercise. I am a 38 year old male who
had beaten up his body playing basketball, volleyball,
tennis for his entire life and thought I would get into
swimming after hearing repeatedly about how much easier it
is on your body.
I've been swimming for about a month - masters program,
individual workout, some private lessons. 4 weeks ago, I was
barely able to do 2 lengths (50 yards) without breathing
heavily...and I would do about 6 lengths and feel like I was
going to have a heart attack.
After the instruction, and reading Total Immersion, and
working on my technique, I can now swim pretty for about 40
minutes and feeling as if i can go longer. I'm doing 400
yards in about 10 minutes 30 seconds (so i'm definitely not
breaking any speed records) and my average stroke count is
about 21-22.
I'm in the process of doing some interval training to get my
speed up. For the last 4 weeks I've been mainly doing drills
and exercises...last week was the first time i timed myself
for 400 yards (11 minutes), and shaved off about 30 seconds
this week. Have been focusing on technique, well in the
beginning, i was just trying not to drown!
Having no frame of reference, what should i shooting for in
terms of time and stroke count? What's fast? I am interested
in doing some open water swimming, at what point should I
consider venturing into open water?
Thanks for any input/help!
