Having worn out two chain rings and now having bent a crank(!), it's time for a new chainset for my Dawes Horizon tourer. I like the look of the Deore M510 non-compact set which is advertised as 9-speed only (I'm on 8-speed). The accepted wisdom seems to be that it should work but all the info I've seen on this set seems pretty definite that it's only compatible with 9-speed - they would say that, wouldn't they?
So the question is, has anyone got experience of using the Deore chainset with an 8-speed set up? Alternatively, any other recommendations? I'm looking for a triple with a 48- tooth outer ring and 170mm cranks. Max price UKP75. The Stronglight Impact seems a posible contender.

I bought myself a nice new Deore M510 chainset recently. The cranks are impressively light. However, it sat at an entirely different place on the taper of the bottom bracket than the Icon chainset it replaced, so rather than replace the bottom bracket as well (I'd already spent too much money) I swapped the chainrings onto the old Icon crankset (which fortunately had the same bolt pattern).

The nine-speed stuff is all cobblers - I have the Deore M510 chainset on two machines - one is a 7 speed and the other a 6 speed! - with no problem (both with Megarange cogs at the back) Arguably the (very) slightly wider chain may wear the Deore rings prematurely BUT again I would doubt that most people would notice the difference. Certainly my LBS man couldn't see a problem.

Spa Cycles do a the Impact for £38 with matching BB for £10-£12 depending on whether you choose steel or alloy cups. I've been thinking about getting one lately but I really only NEED 2 new rings to put in my old Deore (1988) chainset. Don't worry about the 9 speed thing, its just an attempt to get us to replace all of our kit every time we make a change, I will almost certainly work
