  1. Why do some 53's mate to a 39 and some to a 42? Also where's a good place to get chainrings?

If you are talking Shimano A and B, it's the ying and yang of things acording to shimano. Keeping them as Shimano says will Play Shimanos CYA game and result in flawless shifting for the terminally AR.For the rest of the world, mixing them doesn't really matter in actual use. Try nashbar, performance or possibly even ebay for new ones.

  3. First I'm not catching the meaning of your abbrevations.

Second I did note that it somehow aligns the teeth so that the shift is faster. But it sounds like you've tried and it doesn't make any difference, right? Chainrings are too expensive...

If I get non matched ones I'd like to try to find a pair of those ta alize ones, anybody seen them cheap.

  4. I don't think you'd have any trouble with a 39 or a 42 with a 52 or 53. I've used both with both.

I found 39 to be useless unless you live near "real" mountains.
I'm in Australia; we barely have hills, let alone mountains.

  5. It's not that some 53s only mate with 39s and some with 42s. These are just 'standard' (or lack of it) sizes that manufacturers offer and the cycling world has come to accept as 'standard' for doubles. Double cranksets with BCD (bolt circle diameter) of 135 like the common Shimanos and Campys, the most common smallest 'standard' chainring size is a 39. Compact double road cranks like FSAs and/or Cannondale hollowgrams [are offered with] and can take inner chainring sizes that are smaller merely because their BCD is 130mm.

Well, you probably ought to read what Shimano has to say about A and B rings. Shimano BCD is 130, not 135mm, and a 130 will take a 38 ring. 'Compact' cranks use a 110
BCD, and I don't think Cdales Hologram is a 'compact' anyway.....LOL Never have I seen a post with so much misinformation in it.

  7. boudreaux has a point here. There is a lot of misinformation. The original question put forward by hwttdz was (i think) to find out why outer chainrings (52's and 53's) often have "42 or "39" engraved on them, when in fact it doesnt matter a great deal what type/size/brand of chainring is used when coupled with any other chainring. The fact is that shimano in particular like to make a point of their shifting accuracy by adding these engravings and anybody who believes that matching up chainrings will noticably increase shifting precision should go out and buy a matching 'ring, for everybody else, buy whats the best for you in terms of value/size etc. and not the latest shimano marketing exercise. BTW hwttdz if you dont specify what counrty (at the least) you are in then it is difficult to help out with names of shops to buy components from. Try this one though http://www.parker-international.co.uk/home.htm

    I have a 130 that takes a 36.

Sure. Somehow from your original post, I doubt you know a 130 from a hole in the ground.

  10. Excuse me for not stating my country, I'm in the US.

Well since I bought a pair I figured it would do no harm to have a matched set, though for the future I'll remember it doesn't matter much. These things wear for a good long time though, first time I've ever had to change them. How long should you keep them? I'm going to run the 52-39 while I'm here around some real hills then put the 42 on when I go down to the flatter part of the country. I just dropped my 12-25 cassette, which was long past dead for a 12-23, my bike is quickly loosing low gears.

  11. good for you.....you must be getting fitter!

dennis dee out of interest what brand are your 130mm bcd/pcd cranks? Im not doubting that you may have a 36 chainring on yours as i have never tried this, it just sounds to me like you may be a little confused as to the sizing of some cranks. To my knowledge Campag are the only brand to use 135mm (maybe also Miche???), everybody else uses 130mm except for the compact style such as FSA (although they do still have some 130mm models) and i think the new campag ones are coming out with 110mm compact as an option. please correct me if im wrong.

  12. Yes, can someone confirm what drewjc is saying about new Campagnolo compact cranks? Looked around their site and could not find anything.

It's not the brand of cranks:the defing number for the smallest ring is BCD. Campy compact crank is not 110:it's a proprietary BCD.

They have announced one.The BCD is NOT 110,but some something proprietary, so unless other makers ramp up to produce an odd size, you willl be obligated to deal with campy and their nonsense.

Well I think a hole in the ground looks very much like the one on top of your head.

Once again you've proven your worth as per the observation of someone else as follows:

    1) boudreaux never posts first; he lurks on the board trying to be first respondent to other people's postings, or jumps in to argue semantics with other people who do answer

    2) His responses fall into the following categories:
    i) Provides curt answers that just about answer the poster's question, but adds nothing further
ii) Provides just enough data to shoot down someone else's response to a poster, whilst providing no actual help himself
iii) makes demands for supporting scientific evidence for other people's views (often apparently to be contained in white papers, which he seems to believe are the repository for all scientific knowledge...)
iv) Is dismissive (but provides no support for his response)
    v) Is rude (throws child-like insults for no readily apparent reason)
vi) Is Rude and dismissive (see v and vi ;-)

Tell us more about your 130 crank with a 36 ring, why doncha? Maybe your clown hat is a few sizes too small and is restricting the flow of blood to your brain cell?

Temper, temper... you look like a whale with steam coming off that hole in your head. LOL

If you ask nicely I'll even give you a pic. BTW, that ying and yang thing you're so impressed about... you're reading too many science fiction porno. It's just a marketing ploy. You should know better coz those double chainring combinations have been in existence even before Shimano came up with that ying yang. It's the same case as the BS on biopace chainrings. Shame on you schoolboy. LOL

A piture proves nothing. And sure lots of chainring combinations have been around for years. The Shimano A and B stuff has to do with pinning and ramping when used with integrated shifters. And it's not ust marketing. It's more of that CYA stuff and 'flawless' shifting and perfect function like you like to yak about with campy and what 'Campy says'.

Sure. Sugino also makes 110BCD. How about a link to some 36 tooth BCD rings.I can't seem to find any.
