I remember a small survey of L'Equipe on the eve of the final TT in the Tour of '89.All the experts (about 20 or 25) predicted Laurent Fignon would win the Tour, with one exception: Jan Raas who voted for Lemond. Since then I don't believe experts anymore (expect Jan Raas of course).

Those DM won't make the podium. Ducrot must refer to a former Ventoux winner. But he won't make the podium either, not this year. May have the strength for a top-5 and will be given more freedom than the big guns, but still lacks tactically to really benefit from that.

Peter Winnen doesn't really want to be believed; he prefers to produce fiction. Jacques Chapel and Danny Nelissen both try to be the Pim Fortuyn among sports commentators: 'I am going/any which way the wind may be blowing' and Michel Wuyts doesn't have an opinion, just his calculator and some accumulated Flemish cycling knowledge. Gerrie Knetemann just rolls dice. Still I'm surprised that so few predict Petacchi for the green jersey. Fassa Bortolo can and will pull him through the tough stages. What else can they do?

I believe in any case that Iban Mayo will win. He's a thrilling rider who doesn't hold back all season for the sake of Le Grand Boucle - he just goes for it whenever he feels like it.
I also look forward to being pleasantly, or even unpleasantly, surprised.
