This past weekend, my wife and I went with some friends of
ours to Carowinds Amusement Park (about 3 hours) away from
where live. Anyway, we drive up on Friday, did some shopping
at a nearby mall, visited my old college, etc... That night
we decided to unwind by swimming in the hotel pool and
relaxing in the hot tub. I decided to try out my Deltec's
boast or being waterproof. After swimming for about an hour
I went back to the room and was about to disconnect to take
a shower (I always disconnect prior to a shower, because of
lack of a place to clip it). The pump starts beeoping and
tells me that I need to either "unstuck a key or remove
battery". Well, I remove the battery and and replace it, and
get the same error. I place my call to Deltec 24 hour
support line. I am told that the on-call pump specialist
will return my call shortly, to help me resolve the problem.
45 minutes later, I place my second phone call to them and
recieve the same message, after being interupted several
times. Finally the on-call pump specialists calls me back.
And informs me that along with the notes passed on by the
other two phone answerers that I was quite rude. I almost
exploded and explained to her I suppose I was very short, be
when I call a 24 hour support line I expect support from the
person who answers the phone, not to be told the 24 hour
support person will call me back shortly, and that shortly
does NOT mean over an hour later. Well, then we started
discussing the options for a replacement pump. The rep acted
as if getting a pump to the me the next day was just about
impossible. I explained to her that when I was with
MedTronic and needed a replacement one time, the person who
answered the after hours call was able to help me, and a
pump was delivered to my house in under 9 hours after the
phone call. After some reluctance, she agreed to try and
ship the pump first thing Saturday morning to try to make it
there sometime Saturday evening. (The pump did arrive around
6:00 Satruday night.) In the mean time I was told to go back
to injections (which was not a problem, because I always
pack some syringes.) Anyway, I did inject Friday evening,
but I did open the battery compartment on the pump and the
resevoir cavity and surprise water came out of the battery
compartment. I left the areas open over night and the next
morning the pump was back in working order. So I used the
pump all day Saturday with no problem. On our way home
Sunday, my local aread Deltec Rep called and I explained the
entire situation to him, and told him I have every intention
of submersing the replacement in water, to verify its water
proof claims. If it failed also, I told him I would be
contacting my insurance company to begin the process of
leaving DelTec and switching to another pump. Sorry about
the length, but I still would not go back to MiniMed. I
still believe in the Deltec Cozmo, and hope they get things
straightened out.
