  1. My 15 year old son has just been put on insulin. I'm worried
that he might overdose on insulin one day with his mood
swings. What does it take to overdose to the point of going
into a coma? He weighs over 300 pounds.

I isn't going to be any help, but it depends. Sometimes I
can feel myself go low on my standard AM dose of 25 units of
NPH. Usually not though. Once I had to take some humalog and
misjudged, but you know *that* very soon.

I really depends on how much is given, where it is given,
and how much has been eaten and when.

Sorry I can't be or more help. this is a real question for
your son's health team, and would not take any other answer,
especially on an Internet message group.

For a 300 pounder.. A LOT. One of the issues is he already
    is probably pretty insulin insensitive!!!

    That depends.

I had an overdose myself, but I noticed it, so it only
caused me to stay awake most of the night, eating and
drining. I take 30 iu of Insulatard (slow acting) when I go
to bed. This night I used the wrong pen and got 30 iu of
NovoRapid (fast acting). I had already had my last meal for
the day, and I usually take 8 - 16 iu before a meal.. My
wife took me to the hospital and I brought a bottle of
sweet soda with me in the car. I spent the night in
    hospital just in case.

A friend of mine had his normal dose of fast acting insulin
for breakfast. He was ill, vomited and went back to sleep
without eating anything. He woke up in hospital, because his
mother had found him unconscious around lunch time. He was
pretty low at that time, but then he had his full dose of
fast acting insulin and no carbohydrates in his system.

To really get an overdose, I think he must aim specifically
at that. It is possible. Anything is possible.

First of all, I'd like to say that YOU as a parent deserve a
sever smack in the mouth for not doing some worrying about
his fatness before now and for even THINKING of letting your
    kid get that gross.

Fat kids abound, but yours isn't fat, he's RIDICULOUSLY fat
and don't try kidding me that "it's his genes". It's the
food he's eaten and the food you've LET him eat.

As for how much insulin would it take to overdose? Well I'd
gues about an oceans worth, but it's just a guess, so the
    usual disclaimer.

How did he get so completely and vastly obese? Did he do
this to himself? I'm not surprised he has mood swings being
that overweight. You want your doctor to recommend how much
insulin to take and how likely an overdose is, because your
doctor knows your son and only your doctor can make that
judgement. In my opinion, your son has to lose weight
urgently! What does your doc say about the weight?

Have a nice day! Bjørn BL.

I know someone who tried to commit suicide by taking 300
units of Regular insulin (that's what she said she took - I
got to know her years after). A 125 pound female. She was in
a coma for 3 days, but she survived with no apparent damage.
She wasn't diabetic. I doubt this would be the case with all
people, look at the bad shape ofSunny Von Bulow after her
    insulin overdose.

300 lbs?????? Fecking hell......I missed that bit earlier.
Do you realise that the excess weight carried there if
converted to fuel weight, would be enough for a single
engined light helicopter to fly at 130kts for an hour in
which time it could fly from Manchester to Stanstead?

Sort of put it into perspective dont it? Alternatively -

Some people need a helping hand with diabetes when they
first find out they've got it, and some people need a
bit of help working things out wrt doses, food and
exercise, and generally they do what's necessary to get
to grips with it, but the ONLY thing these people are
likely to change is the insulin dose, because it's
obvious they eat anything and everything in sight and
the boy spends all his time on his [censored]. Exercise isn't
a word ANY of them would understand, so that just leaves
the insulin to play around with.

Dare I tell them that insulin can help make you fat? 🙂

Hi, Beav. Have you been been having a bad day, a really,
foul, for King and Country awful day, by any chance?

Actually, I've had one of the best days I can remember, even
for Queen and Country, but I still can't do with parents who
don't take care of their kids, and letting a kig get to
    300lbs ISN'T taking care.

What's the betting that the parents are even fatter?

    Beav

    Sorry you don't

Well Ted, that's a load of bollocks and you know it. No-one
(and I mean NO-one) in this world ever got to weigh 1/4 ton
by following a sensible diet. If you have one single cite to
the contrary, I'll be VERY pleased to get on my hands and

Odds are the kid (probably because

Beav, I know you're using dramatic emphasis here, but a
quarter ton when I went to school was 560 lbs in the
imperial system and 250 Kg or 550 lbs in the metric. Either
way, it's a bit more than 300 lbs.

Even so, a bit over an eighth of a ton is probably
obese unless he's a seven foot tall front-row forward
    or nose-tackle.

I think by now the parents may have your message. Even if
    they probably didn't want it.

    carbs to email.

  19. First thing BMT is an almost worthless measure - excess fat
    is a more accurate measure.

As for my nephew, he was over 6', and all muscle.

He walked at 6 months, and was always bigger and stronger
    than anyone would expect.

I'm sure that over the years, his weight HAS been mentioned,
both to himself AND to his parents, but some people seem to
need a LOT of educating before they get off thier arses.
