lightening but the occupant is lying inside, flat. Does the

No, you get fried inside because the ground around the hit
gets electrified also (the same happens when a tree gets hit
by lightning) No TR I'm afraid

There was also an interesting thing on the telly a long time
ago about the precautions people take whilst working on live
overhead power lines. Can't remember the details, I think
they were wearing weird suits and doing it in a cage
suspended from a helicopter but I could be talking rubbish. -

Same applies to aircraft. Apparently its not uncommon for
aircraft (in flight!) to be struck, but the lightening
travels around the aeroplane and discharges from

Not only books - a bloke I met in a pub told me about it.I must admit to feeling better in a car than out in the open
during a violent electrical storm, and one contributing
reason was that the rain is often coming down like stair
rods. :-) It happened to us recently, and visibility was so
bad that I pulled into a lay-by and let those with more
urgent journeys carry on.

A metal box (such as a car) can protect from a lightning
strike. This is due to the skin effect, which causes the
charge to flow over the outside layer of the metal box. This
is different from (ie, not the same as) the Faraday effect.There is nothing much that will insulate you from lightning
since most strikes are at the order of megavolts. Only air,
and a lot of it, is a poor enough conductor to do the job.

... and there are conductive strips on the cockpit windows
and radomes so as to stop the lightning discharge damaging
the aircraft.
