  1. Imagine the scenario, inside a tent, heavy rain outside with
    water pouring down the sides of the tent. A couple of
    external metal hoops support the tent in a dome shape. The
    top of the tent gets hit by an average strengh bolt of
    lightening but the occupant is lying inside, flat. Does the
    water and the hoops turn the tent into a Faraday cage?

    quite possibly.

    I wouldn't like to test out the theory though ;-)

    No, you get fried inside because the ground around the hit
    gets electrified also (the same happens when a tree gets hit
    by lightning) No TR I'm afraid

    No it doesn't, but since a Faraday cage will not shield you
    from a lightning strike (although it will ruin your radio
    reception :-) that doesn't make much difference.

    Probably Adam Hart_Davis in a Faraday suit, being winched up
    to a high voltage source (250,000 volts IIRC) and drawing
    metre long 'lightning' from
    it. Maybe in time a Faraday Suit will become as essential a
    piece of gear for hillwalking as a waterproof jacket!

    No, you'll find lightning doesn't care much about Ohm's law.

    There was also an interesting thing on the telly a long time
    ago about the precautions people take whilst working on live
    overhead power lines. Can't remember the details, I think
    they were wearing weird suits and doing it in a cage
    suspended from a helicopter but I could be talking rubbish.

    Same applies to aircraft. Apparently its not uncommon for
    aircraft (in flight!) to be struck, but the lightening
    travels around the aeroplane and discharges from
    beneath....or something like that!

    Not only books - a bloke I met in a pub told me about it.

    I must admit to feeling better in a car than out in the open
    during a violent electrical storm, and one contributing
    reason was that the rain is often coming down like stair
    rods. :-) It happened to us recently, and visibility was so
    bad that I pulled into a lay-by and let those with more
    urgent journeys carry on.

    Try it on a bike. I got caught in a really horrendous
    downpour once. Couldn't see a thing and decided maybe it
    was a good idea to stop when I realised I was on the wrong
    side of the road heading into a ditch.


    Push-bike or motorbike? I owned one for 6 months whilst
    doing National Service, and it was then that I discovered
    that rain is made up of thousands of sharp needles. ;-)

    A metal box (such as a car) can protect from a lightning
    strike. This is due to the skin effect, which causes the
    charge to flow over the outside layer of the metal box. This
    is different from (ie, not the same as) the Faraday effect.

    There is nothing much that will insulate you from lightning
    since most strikes are at the order of megavolts. Only air,
    and a lot of it, is a poor enough conductor to do the job.

    ... and there are conductive strips on the cockpit windows
    and radomes so as to stop the lightning discharge damaging
    the aircraft.
