I've tried Stevia: BITTER, BITTER.
And, that other sweetener that is something like 1/3 the
calories of sugar? I had to use LOTS of it. And, it gives
you BAD gas and diarrhea.
Is there a good (and hopefully natural) sweetener?

Stevia is not as good as its proponents claim. See:
" "Although there is no evidence of harm to people,
laboratory studies of stevia have found potential cancer and
reproductive-health problems. Stevia depressed sperm
production in male rats and reduced the number and size of
the offspring of female hamsters. Until those concerns are
disproven, stevia should not be used by manufacturers in
soft drinks, candy, or other foods," said David Schardt,
associate nutritionist for CSPI.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over the past
10 years has rejected three food-additive petitions
for stevia because its safety had not been adequately
demonstrated. Canada also has not approved its use,
and last year a scientific review panel for the
European Community declared that stevia is
unacceptable for use in food."
It seems like you should be using real sugar and/or
aspartame, which has never been proven to be the evil the
anti-aspartamistas claim it is. Scratch the surface of their
claims, and you will find nothing to worry about, unless you
suffer from PKU, which you should already know.

One of the best sweeteners available is called "SUCROSE".
100% nature it is one of the most wide spread sugars in
nature. Used in moderation it is 100% safe when used by
otherwise healthy persons.

In this case, both. Several years ago I debated these anti-
aspartamistas and was email bnox bombed by them, for showing
that Betty Martini was, is, and always will be, a liar.
You should know that she is the leading nutcase on the net
wrt aspartame. She was given a honorary doctorate by a non-
accredited bible college and now calls herself doctor. Hulda
Clark, and you know how I feel about her, has more of a
right to call herself doctor.

JO's point, which you obvously missed because of it's subtle
presentation, is that perhaps you should examine your
reasons for wanting a sugar substitute. Drinking "diet" soft
drinks will not make you skinny. If you are worried about
the calories in sugar, eat and drink less sweet stuff. Even
if you are diabetic, sugar is not totally taboo; just make
it an occasional treat in small amounts, not a major
component of your diet. Learn to drink your coffee and tea
unsweetened. Learn to do without whatever it is that you are
trying to sweeten with substitutes.
Oh, and learn to respond to strangers in newsgroups with
courtesy and reason, not schoolyard namecalling.

Do not worry about those who respond to posts with childish
remarks!!! There is a myth put forth by those who want to
market expensive and off time dangerous sugar replacements
that table sugar or sucrose is unnatural and unhealthy. It
is neither!! As I mentioned it is one of the most abundant
of all sugars found in nature. It makes up around 10% by
weight of "fruits" like dates. Sucrose is composed of a
glucose and fructose molecule linked together. In the human
body sucrose undergoes hydrolysis to form an equal mixture
of D-glucose and D-fructose. Honey , loved by the table
sugar haters, is largely a mixture of sucrose, D-glucose and
D-fructose. So in effect eating table sugar (sucrose) has
the same effect of eating honey minus the antigens found in
honey that can in some people cause a fatal reaction. Eating
sugar in moderation is not only NOT fattening but very
healthy way to cut one appetite and lose weight. This has
been know by the ladies of Europe for centuries and is the
basis for the afternoon tea. A little tea with sugar and a
sweet cake at around 4:00 in the after noon serves to raise
the blood sugar level and stem the appetite. So that less is
consumed for the evening meal. The same is true for the
morning tea. One major problem is the English speaking world
is that much of the food consumed is pre-package or pre-
prepared and loaded with extra sugar. Taking a little extra
time to prepare food from the basic ingredients can over
come this problem. Not drinking "soft drinks" by the litre
(gallon) is also a good plan. Also don't stick a bowl of
"sugar poofos" in from of your kid in the morning and then
complain about the sugar company causing them to be over
weight with bad teeth. Get up ten minute early and fix the
kid a decent meal.
JO
(If you are looking at cutting your weight, you might want
to look into the recent Atkins studies which show that
protein regulates appetite, thus you eat much less on
Atkins) Anth

I heard of one called Trutina Dulcem (see link below). It is
supposedly all natural and low glycemic. Haven't tried it
myself so I can't comment on it; and I hear it's expensive.
I included a link below (in case you're interested).
