Calcium from Eggshells?

  1. If I dissolve calcium from eggshells using vinegar, how much
    calcium can I get from one eggshell, how much 5% vinegar do
    I need and how usable for my body is it? I eat an egg a day
    and was wondering if this is a useable source. Thanks.

    Believe it or not, my mother used to feed that to me and my
    siblings. Someone had told her that it was a good source of
    something or other - probably calcium. All the mothers in
    her circle did the same thing.

    has anybody ever had a calcium deficiency?

    Now before anybody gets all fired up about osteoporosis,
    please research how these people have so much calcium that
    it is coming out in their [censored]. I doubt they are have a
    deficiency.

    I'll suggest that much of the extra calcium just passes thru
    the GI tract without being absorbed. In the past, some
    people did manage to get high calcium levels from truly huge
    antacid intakes needed to partly/somewhat moderate assist in
    the management of GERD, stomach ulcers, and hyperacidic
    stomach conditons. ....Milk-alkali syndrome. Of course, some
    of the problem was Mg. At the modest levels at which people
    supplement, milk-alkali shouldn't be a problem.

    It is sad that many focus almost solely on calcium though
    the more general desire to prevent osteoporosis is clearly
    reasonable. Part of the problem is the fear of vitamin D
    that has been drilled to the dieticians, nurses, and even
    physicians. Plus, both the fear and abject ignorance
    concerning the benefits of vitamin K supplementation. Under
    use of both plays a role in the prevalence of osteoporosis..
    Further, the suggested intakes for both vitamins are just
    too low. Dangerously low, IMHO. BOTH these vitamin are
    needed for the formation of healthy osteocalcin.

    Further the medical community has failed in its
    implementation of hormone supplementation in the middle
    aged. In the females, they use the wrong estrogens, I
    suspect estriol would be a better choice. Also, DHEA in
    quite modest doses looks likely to be useful. In males, the
    medical community needs to be much more liberal in its use
    of testosterone and related metabolites for variety of
    maladies including low bone mass.. Granted with an eye on
    the health of the prostate and the estrogen levels. There
    are meds that can lower the resulting estrogen levels
    during T Tx.

    Ideally, enhancing Sertoli cell function would be a goal of
    research. Carnitine looks promising.

    I assume you know what Sertoli cells do?

    Finally aren't eggshells sometimes treated with mineral oil?
    That can not be good.

    Carbonate), which by weight, an average egg would contain 2
    grams of calcium.

    That's one of the best questions I have ever seen in this
    news group. It comes in three parts and deserves an
    answer. I'll try to answer part of it now and will do some
    research and hopefully find a complete solution to your
    worthy request.

    It is a shame that the weak responses in this thread so far
    have left such a good inquiry unanswered.

    Many postings in this group are by persons trying to push
    their own ideas about nutrition and health. Many are looking
    for a place where they can sound clever. They cite
    questionable scientific studies right along with peer-
    reviewed papers published in reputable, well-known journals
    as a method to promote themselves. It didn't used to be this
    way. At one time this was one of the finest forums on the
    Internet with some of the keenest minds offering generous
    and well-organized material.

    Jeff, sorry about my rant. Let me get to the specifics of
    your eggshell-calcium chemistry question. First, it might be
    helpful to know where you got the idea to dissolve eggshell
    with vinegar. (I remember an experiment in grade school that
    enabled an unpeeled hard-boiled egg to pass through the neck
    of a milk bottle by first softening the shell by treatment
    with vinegar.) Perhaps the source(s) that initiated your
    inquiry might offer clues for further investigation.

    Just a note for caution: Are eggshells safe to consume?
    Mom's recipe offered by Ora gives us some "folk-wise" and
    perhaps scientificaly valid advice:

    consider when planning to ingest eggshells then Ora's recipe

    The "browning" that Ora describes in her mother's recipe
    comes from organic compounds breaking down and releasing the
    basic carbon (dark color) atoms that bind together the very
    chemicals that carry out the processes of life. The browning
    indicates the destruction of the potential for any microbes
    to live. I should mention also that the brown is mostly
    coming from the proteins and other organics naturally found
    in eggshell, not from a plethora of dangerous salmonella.

    I believe that Ora's heat treatment (from now on to be
    called "Orafication" `o-rah-fi-`c=E5-shun) would make
    eggshells safe to use if salmonella was a potential danger.

    But would Orafication alter the chemistry of eggshells in a
    way that would effect the calcium product obtained with
    vinegar? It is possible, but I don't know enough chemistry
    to say for sure.

    As you mentioned, Jeff, eggshells contain calcium carbonate
    CaCO=B3... Calcium carbonate is also found as the major
    constituent of Limestone. This common yet valuable mineral
    is ground and heated in kilns to make "lime" in the form of
    "quicklime" and also treated further to make "slaked lime".
    The chemistry of the process isn't too complicated and could
    be related to Orafication. I think the major difference in
    outcome of the two processes would arise from the two
    different heating procedures.

    In heating the Calcium carbonate of limestone the carbonate
    liberates carbon dioxide to leave calcium oxide (quicklime):

    heat + CaCO=B3 ---> CO=B2 gas + CaO

    The quicklime absorbs water from the air and from liquids
    that contain water. Industrially water is added to quicklime
    to form the "slaked lime" (calcium hydroxide) that is used
    in cement:

    CaO + H=B2O ---> Ca(OH)=B2 + heat

    I don't think that any such reactions would matter or occur
    during Orafication because the household ovens are not
    generating the type of heat used in the industrial
    processing of limestone. I think that Calcium carbonate
    releases its Carbon dioxide at about 890=B0C which is about
    1634=B0F and far above the temperature in the oven that
    Ora's mother used.

    To wrap up the question as to whether or not pre-heating
    eggshell would effect chemical combining of CaCO=B3 with
    vinegar: probably not much in an inorganic/organic acid
    chemical reaction pathway, but the breakdown from oven heat
    of large protein molecules might render the eggshell more
    permeable and available to react with the acetic acid.

    personal correspondence that CLEAN eggshells were indeed
    safe to consume.

    I used to ingest eggshells in order to increase my daily
    Calcium intake. First I boiled the eggs, then cooled them,
    peeled them and set the shell out to dry. After a day or so
    I placed the dried shells on a shallow cookie pan into a
    medium hot oven (gas operated). I removed the shells after
    about 30 minutes or just when they started to brown. Very
    similar to orafication.

    I set the oven-browned shells on the counter to cool to
    room temperature. I then placed as many as I could into a
    small coffee bean grinder and powdered them. This took
    about 45 to 60 seconds. I ran the powder through a fine
    sieve to winnow out any larger bits of shell or extraneous
    membrane. To use, I measured a small amount of powder by
    spoon, placed the powder into my mouth and then swallowed
    it with a glass of water.

    I never suffered any ill effects from my eggshell
    concoction. In fact there were a few times that I had used
    the eggshell powder to successfully alleviate an upset
    stomach. The powdered eggshells were mostly Calcium
    carbonate, the same active ingredient found in antacids such
    as Tums=AE.

    And now Jeff, what about eggshells treated with vinegar? The
    calcium carbonate and the acetic acid probably react to form
    calcium acetate. But like I said before I don't know enough
    chemistry to give a worthy opinion about this.

    A textbook I have claims that Calcium acetate also has two
    other forms that occur as hydrates. All three compounds are
    colorless solids that when heated decompose before they can
    melt and are all soluble in hot or cold water.

    I have never seen calcium acetate being used as a
    nutritional supplement. I don't know why it would be
    excluded. There are other calcium salts made from organic
    acids that are used as sources for increasing calcium
    intake. For instance I have seen being used calcium
    gluconate, lactate, citrate, maleate... being made from the
    organic acids respectively gluconic, lactic, citric, maleic.

    Calcium acetate might have a storage problem or have an off
    odor or flavor. It might not be as stable of a molecule as
    the other acid compounds. It may be too reactive and
    combines too easily with other common ingredients. Or
    perhaps when making calcium acetate the heat might destroy
    the compound before a useful product can be obtained.

    I will do some reading and will comment later if I find
    anything useful. I wish I had better grades in my chemistry
    class in school. I hope some knowledgable person comes along
    to answer this question. I would certainly like to know. I'm
    not much of an "egghead". ha ha

    It may end up that the only way to completely answer this
    question is by experimentation.

    I'd think the calcium acetate should be a good calcium
    source. It is a food additive used as anti-mold agent in
    baked goods and it is used in sausage casings.Calcium
    acetate is much more soluble the calcium carbonate in plain
    cold water.

    As calcium is divalent, you will need two acetic acid
    molecules to make calcium acetate. A mole of the acetate
    anion weights 59 grams. And you need two moles of acetate
    for one mole of calcium ( 40 grams). Therefore, you will end
    up with a chemical which contain in one mole: 40 grams
    calcium to 118 grams acetate plus 18 grams water molecule
    for the waters of hydration. Ca(CH3COO)2*H2O

    If you really what to do this you should be able to do the
    math from here.

    If you use egg shell from hard boiled eggs, you won't have
    to worry about microorganisms.

    But it may not be. One textbook on my shelf, Food
    Microbiology 4th ed by William C. Frazier and Dennis C.
    Westhoff (1988) lists a whole array of possible treatments
    for whole eggs to lengthen shelf life. I don't know which
    ones are currently used but some sounded nasty. Oiling the
    eggs doesn't sound good and mineral oil not something that
    should be in food, IMHO. Nor would I want sodium
    pentachlorophenate or related compounds in a food. Yet, this
    substance has been used to preserve whole eggs. Possible
    detergent residues and quanternary ammonium compound residue
    would seem to be other possiblities. But maybe I am just
    being a worrier and most eggs are free of any such risks. I
    just don't know.

    Calcium Acetate is said to be made by the action of acetic
    acid on calcium hydroxide; the solution is then filtered and
    the water removed by evaporation. It looks like industry
    uses alot of this chemical. I doubt it is too reactive. It
    maybe that most industrial produced calcium acetate is a
    rather crude/impure product???? As the acetic acid used in
    the process is often coming from from wood
    vinegar/pyroligneous acid, a crude yellow to red mixture
    from wood distillation that contains methanol, acetic acid,
    acetone, furfural, and numerous tars and related products. I
    am only looking at an old copy of Hawley's Condensed
    Chemical Dictionary .............

    calcium). Information from the web is many times
    incorrect. Take this into consideration if you decide to
    experiment. Check all facts for yourself and consult
    professional help when considering the use of methods that
    could effect your health.

    METHOD ONE

    In this thread I have already explained in part how I used
    eggshell as a supplement for increasing my calcium intake. I
    have this to add: one teaspoon of powdered eggshell contains
    about 1.8 grams (1800 mg) of elemental calcium in the form
    of calcium carbonate.

    The shell from one egg has about 2 grams of elemental
    calcium.

    To powder egg shell use a small coffee grinder. This little
    device has been in my kitchen for more than twenty years.
    I've used it hundreds of times for just about everything
    except grinding coffee. You can get a good one for under
    twenty dollars.

    Be Careful !!! Powdered eggshell is slightly caustic. Avoid
    breathing the dust or getting the powder in your eyes. This
    might be a difficult thing to do when you are in the process
    of placing powder in your mouth and using a liquid to chase
    it. Putting the powder into a capsule is safer. Or mixing
    with water stops the powder from becoming airborne but makes
    it a little harder to take.

    METHOD TWO (untried)

    Into a small jar or glass place the well-crushed or powdered
    shell from an egg. Barely cover it with vinegar. Loosely
    cover the top with plastic wrap in the manner to keep out
    dust, etc but still allowing gas (carbon dioxide) to escape.

    If too much foaming occurs and this becomes an overflow try
    adding a well-crushed or powdered tablet of "Gas-X"=AE or
    generic equivalent. This might get expensive so experiment
    in order to determine the smallest amount that works. (use
    only if needed)

    The shell should completely dissolve in 18 to 30 hours. If
    any shell remains after 3 days keep adding small portions
    vinegar until it eventually dissolves. Keep track of how
    much you add so the next time you will better know the
    amount to use.

    This mixture should contain calcium acetate and some excess
    vinegar. You will have about 2 grams (2000 mgs) of elemental
    calcium per shell of each egg you use.

    There might also be some membrane or other naturally
    occurring compounds that will not dissolve. Manually remove
    any such debris from the solution.

    The advantage of this method is that it is easy and you
    don't need any laboratory equipment to determine the
    approximate amount of calcium in the solution.

    The disadvantage would be the taste and the unpalatable
    nature of a vinegar concoction.

    I have added this paragraph as an afterthought for
    experimenters to consider. The info does not apply to the
    three methods in this post~

    Other data that may be of use in experimental design: About
    30 to 45 grams of calcium acetate will dissolve in 100 ml of
    water=95=95=95=95=8F=8FCalcium acetate as a solid will draw
    water from the air (hygroscopic)=95=95=95=95Even though
    acetic acid boils at 118=B0C and water at 100=B0C the
    mixture of the two constantly boils at the lower temperature
    of 76.6=B0C with a concentration of 3% acid in the
    distillate (azeotropic)=95=95=95=95the purity of calcium
    acetate cannot be determined by the melting point
    (decomposes).

    METHOD THREE (untried)

    Put the shells of about two dozen hard boiled eggs into a
    small paper bag. Manually crush them well by firmly
    squeezing and kneading the bag. Be careful not to tear the
    bag and spill the contents.

    Place the shells on a shallow baking tin (like those made
    for cookies). Spread them around and place the tray into an
    oven of about 300=B0F for about 30 minutes or until the
    shells just start to turn brown. Be careful not to cook the
    shell too much or this method won't work. It is best to
    remove them just before they start browning.

    After cooling, remove any visible membrane from the shells.
    It is not important to remove all of the membrane, just
    most of it.

    Weigh the shells on a scale to a tenth of a gram or better.
    Multiply this by 0.95 in order to estimate the amount of
    calcium carbonate. This value will be used later in the
    experiment.

    Place the shell into a glass or jar and slowly add vinegar
    until it is covered. The idea here is different from method
    two. This time we want an excess of eggshell instead of an
    excess of vinegar.

    Once again measure and record the volume of vinegar that you
    use. You might need to add the Gas-X=AE as before to prevent
    an overflow.

    The next step depends on what you have before you. I
    mentioned that this method has not been tried so I am not
    sure as to what will happen. If after 3 days the bubbling
    stops and the excess unreacted eggshell settles at the
    bottom you can carefully decant the calcium acetate solution
    away from the leavings. Try not to get any shell into the
    solution as you decant. Save the solution.

    If this works then add cool tap water to the unreacted
    eggshells just to cover. Stir gently and let the solids
    settle at the bottom. This water is then decanted in the
    same way as the calcium acetate solution. It should contain
    most of the rest of the calcium acetate that was left on the
    shells. Add this liquid to the other more concentrated
    solution obtained by decantation.

    If the original eggshell/vinegar mixture is too thick or
    forms a gel or suspension that prohibits the decantation
    then you might have to experiment with filtration. A
    handkerchief or coffee filter might be used to separate the
    liquid from the solids.

    After decanting (or filtering) place the unreacted
    eggshell onto the cookie sheet again and heat them up as
    before. We are trying to drive off all the water so that
    only shell remains.

    Remove the shells from the oven after drying is complete.
    Let them cool and then weigh them to about one tenth of a
    gram. Multiply this value by .95 and subtract this product
    from the weight of the amount of calcium carbonate
    calculated to be in the shells before adding the vinegar.
    This will give you the amount of calcium carbonate that has
    reacted to become calcium acetate (and CO=B2). Multiply this
    value by 0.4 to obtain the amount of elemental calcium that
    was reacted.

    Take the amount of elemental calcium that was reacted in
    grams and divide it by the volume in milliliters (ml) to
    determine how much calcium there is in your calcium
    acetate solution.

    For example, if you have 40 grams of calcium that reacted
    and the volume of the solution is 250 ml then 40 =F7 250 =3D
    0.16 grams of elemental calcium (as calcium acetate) per
    milliliter.

    There are five milliliters in a teaspoon, so 5 =D7 0.16 =3D
    0.8 grams of calcium per teaspoon. (800 mg per teaspoon)

    The advantage to this method is the amount of vinegar in the
    final solution is zero or very low. Also, the amount of
    calcium in the solution is known and calculated. In method
    two the amount is only a guess.

    The disadvantage is the need for a laboratory scale and a
    more accurately graduated container to measure volumes of
    liquid. The level of difficulty is greater in method three.

    DO NOT FORGET: These last two methods have not been tried.
    There is a very strong possibility that there are mistakes.
    I was never able to verify that calcium acetate was safe to
    use as a calcium supplement. There is always the possibility
    of chemical contamination of eggshells from commercially
    produced eggs that has not yet been detected.

    to your question. The specific answers to your question were
    buried in the text of my post. So this is mostly what you
    were looking for:

    1) there are about 2 grams of calcium in the shell
    from one egg

    2) it takes from 18 to 30 hours to dissolve the shell of one
    egg covered in vinegar

    3) one teaspoon of powdered eggshell has 1.8 grams of
    calcium

    4) eggshell is mostly calcium carbonate (94%)

    5) calcium carbonate is 40% calcium

    6) I found calcium acetate being used as a calcium
    supplement in three web sites. But this is no guarantee
    that it is safe or effective.

    Yes, you do know. Your prudence is justified. Although I
    don't consume eggshell at the present time I knew when I was
    using shell that chemical contamination was a possibility.

    In spite of this I went ahead and ingested eggshell because
