    material to your question about the amount of calcium
    in eggshell~

    CONCEPTS OF EGGSHELL QUALITY By Dr. Gary D. Butcher and Dr.
    Richard D. Miles*

    THE EGGSHELL ITSELF Most good quality eggshells from
    commercial layers contain approximately
    2.2 grams of calcium in the form of calcium carbonate. About
    95% of the dry eggshell is calcium carbonate weighing 5.5
    grams. The average eggshell contains about 0.3%
    phosphorous, 0.3% magnesium, and traces of sodium,
    potassium, zinc, manganese, iron and copper. If the
    calcium from the shell is removed, the organic matrix
    material is left behind. This organic material has calcium
    binding properties, and its organization during shell
    formation influences the strength of the shell.

  2. Here is info from a company that boasts about the
    superiority of their product which uses eggshell as a
    calcium source. Although I can't validate their claims I
    suspect there may be truth in the sell.

    Q. I read that eggshell calcium is the least bioavailable.
    If this is true, why do we use eggshell calcium in our
    calcium supplements?

    R. Contrary to what you read, eggshell calcium is highly
    bioavailable. And GNLD products have been formulated to
    maximize bioavailability. We chose eggshell calcium
    because it is a superior, organically-derived source of
    calcium. It consistently provides a high degree of purity
    in a form that tends to be more readily soluble to
    improve absorption by the body.

    Also, eggshell calcium is an excellent natural source of
    calcium carbonate, which delivers the most calcium per unit

    It is important to know that bioavailability is not easily
    measured. The testing is involved, expensive, and in the
    case of radioactive measures, dangerous. GNLD uses both

  3. Here is an eggshell-vinegar recipe from a Naturopath Doctor
    (ND). This formula has been around for some time. The good
    doctor doesn't say how much calcium is in the concoction.
    But since it is "Natural" it must be good.

    After breaking the clean eggshell open, be careful to pull
    out the small membrane that lines the shell.=A0 (Best to use
    eggs from free-roaming chickens...check at your local health
    food store)=A0 This membrane is high in cholesterol and it
    is wise to eliminate it.=A0

    Dry the shells at room temperature or under 130 =B0F.=A0
    When thoroughly dry, powder the shells in a blender, nut
    mill or with a rolling pin.=A0 When the powder from one
    dozen eggshells is ready and finely powdered, cover with one
    pint of apple cider vinegar or one pint of lemon juice
    (lemon juice will sour and spoil quicker than the apple
    cider vinegar).=A0 Mix the eggshell powder and liquid in a
    large container, because the chemical reaction will cause
    the solution to foam.=A0 Allow this to set for several days.
    Then strain and combine with honey and water (to taste).

    For the adult, use two or more tablespoons (or add to
    distilled water, tea or juice if desired) and for children

    this is a great help in adjusting the hydrochloric acid

    and one Mole of calcium (40 grams) reacts with two Moles of
    acetic acid (2=D760=3D120 grams) to produce the product
    calcium acetate

    and assuming all the calcium reacts with all the acid to
    make a 100% yield of calcium acetate

    (for one egg) 2 g Ca =D7 120/40 =3D 6 g acetic acid

    6 g of acetic acid =D7 100/5 =3D 120 ml vinegar (5%
    acetic acid)

    120 ml ~ =8D=BD=A0cup =B1 0.01 cup

    For ONE EGGSHELL you need ONE HALF CUP VINEGAR

    I was hoping someone would come along and check my chemistry
    in previous post.

    Does one half cup vinegar for the shell of one egg sound
    right? I wrote:
