Ford Excursions don't fit on trails except those trails
cleared for C- 130 landings, so I'm thankful for that. It's
unfortunate that they didn't shut down that road though. It
will be interesting to see who is found at fault.

Not sure who was at fault here... I was in this race riding
Sport Class... I came by after the accident and before the
EMT's... When I went by I saw the one guy rolling around on
the ground with the broken arm and they had a blanket around
the who had passed. I remember riding by thinking that did
not look good.

One thing that I will say that may be confusing in the
article... The race organizers stated many times to be
careful due to on comming traffic on the road. The way
those mirrors stick out on vechicles (the trailer
mirrors). it would be hard to see... No one found out
about the death until after the race. It definitely cast a
down mood on the event...

I think I speak for everyone at the event that our hearts go
out to his family. No one expects to die in a MTB race...

Creek is a fairly busy road. I always hated road racing on
open roads. Packs aren't as smart as individual riders in
that you may be following a wheel of a rider, following a
wheel of a rider following the guy at the front. The guy at
the front sees an obstacle and reacts to avoid it as anyone
would. Four guys back in the pack, all of a sudden the
"wheel" disappears to the side and you're staring at an
unavoidable hazard. I could think of several different ways
where this guy could've ended up eating a mirror coming at
him at 70 mph (both vehicles cumulative speed) where no
major mistakes on anyone's part were responsible. Just the
cumulative effects of several people. You can't trust the
pack entirely, and have to look at what's ahead-hard to do
on a twisting dirt road at 40 mph in a pack of riders.

Racers get up to 40mph on MTBs?

Kane Creek road is fairly steep maybe an 8-10% grade (?) in
places and was good smooth dirt road the last time I rode it
(been a whlie). 40 mph in a pack sounds pretty plausible.
I've done about 45 on fire roads by myself and I'm no DHer.
Even if the rider and the truck were doing 15, he'd still
have no chance. 30 mph is about how fast you're going after
falling 40 feet. Putting it in those terms gives me a good
idea how people lose going up against cars.

For mountain biker deaths to be rare, they would have to
happen on occasion. If they didn't, they would be non-

See Mikey, even you don't know precisely what happened. All
the article says is that somebody died and a collision with
a vehicle was involved. However, if the first rider to
actually hit the mirror merely causes the remainin riders to
take some sort of evasive action resulting in the
unfortunate event of matching paths with the vehicle then
that is hardly the same as saying "he ran into the car"

But then, we're all used to your rather poor attempts to use
logic to state your case since you've been discredited by
everybody time and time again.

Car was moving (and possibly too fast, according to the
article), and he was moving. The car was hit by the bike
and the bike was hit by the car. I'm not sure what
difference it makes though, as paved or not, he was on a
road, not a trail.

BTW, we 1/4 through 2004. How many road bikers have been
killed since the start of the year compared to MTB'ers?
