Anyone got any ideas for a decent sport to take up to avoid eventually having really powerful legs and dead scrawny arms and torso? It's not like I'm in grave danger of that happening yet though 😉.
Apologies to anyone who's getting sick of my millions of questions whilst I'm here 😉.

100 press-ups every day will help.

Swimming. Will help build upper body strength and also improves stamina no end.
If you want an all-round athletic physique: rowing - your powerful quads will be an asset swimming - might be a step towards tri?
If you want an all-*round* physique darts snooker golf
:-)

How many? I suspect I'll let the gut reduce some more before I start that 😉.
I've been on one of those rowing machines a few times, but I'm not sure I could keep it up for long, much like I doubt I'd stick at riding an exercise bike. Not sure where the nearest water is or what a boat costs...
How easy do you want it!?
If you join a club and you use their boats, most clubs have a 6 week starter course to let you try before you buy; this time of year is when they run typically. It's ok to hate the ergo though, most rowers do too!!!!

As for swimming, same goes as for the press ups, I suspect I'd scare people in a pair of speedos 😉.

Rock Climbing should do it - much more interesting than press ups or swimming

Kayaking - you also get to buy more brightly coloured kit and get wet.

I'll need considerably bigger arms before I even try rock climbing.

Cycling uses a lot more upper body and torso muscle than you might think (very much the same balance as rowing, in fact), although only sprinters get a lot of muscle development above the waist. So swim (if you really want shoulders), or try and get your flying 200m time under 12.5 seconds or so.

Then start with 100 sit-ups a day - will reduce gut quickly! :-)

Weight lifting, rock climbing, etc etc. Otherwise just do some upper body exercises at the gym, or press ups at home.
Failing that,. you could turn yourself upside down and pedal your bike with your hands, thus providing not only the ideal upper body workout, but also giving your hind legs a well earned rest!
As for swimming, same goes as for the press ups, I suspect I'd scare people in a pair of speedos 😉.
My local pool offers an early bird session between 06:00 and 09:00. If you can drag yourself out of bed this early it's quite good as it tends to be split 50:50 between the local swimming club, and the company execs trying to fulfill their exercise quota before driving from one business lunch to another. ;-)

Not true. It's as much about balance as strength. I watched a woman who was strong for her size, but no weightlifter rattle along at 45 degrees as if she was on the flat. You would rapidly build arm and chest strength, but you'd also find your balance improving rapidly.

Not so sure about that. It'll probably lead to a mild increase as you increase muscle bulk. Since sit-ups tend to be rather anaerobic exercise, your fat burning will be severly limited. The sit-ups to lose the gut is a very "Men's Health" concept!

Most gut expansion is due to flabbiness of the abs. Sit-ups simply tighten everything up.
