  1. Thanks to all the posts to my posting " Why do cars hate us
    "

The advice is great, like keep well away from the gutter and
show some authority. Problem is, that you only have to be
hit once, and you most probably will pay for it with your
life, and the car driver will get if he is lucky 6 months
    behind bars.

I think I will stick to bike ways that are off road, but
then I have to put up with angry joggers and walkers, and
rollerbladers, but thats another story right.

Yeah, it's way more dangerous IMO. I much prefer my chances
    with cars than pedestrians.

  3. Greetings, Sorry, getting off the road is no good at all.
This is exactly what the politicans and engineers want you
to do. Their shared use paths embody a very old Australian
philosophy, `Get off the road ya mug'. If we don't maintain
an on-road prescence, dangerous as that is at present, they
can forget that we exist and the road will belong
exclusively to the Great God Car. We have a legal and moral
right to use the roads and I intend to keep exercising it,
and I've had my share of bingles. Regards, Ray.

In over 20 years of riding I have actually come into contact or had an accident caused by another vehicle twice. and the second one was when I put my head down to stomp up a hill and ran up the ares of a parked car! (oh, the embarrassment🙄 )

reaching for head to signify touching of wood now.......

    Start rant:

In Victoria, if you're a PYT, cry a lot, even though you
were SMSing when you plowed the cyclist down, you'll get SFA
    time behind bars.

And your bike lobby, of 37,000 members will do SFA in
protest and concentrate more on it's wonderful big
    bike rides.

    End rant.

    For now...........

Print it on a jersey. That way we can wear it on rides and have an excuse for sitting on the back. "I'm here to call out the cars and spread the message."

I am getting sick of getting honked at by stupid people,
smiling and waving as if you recognise them gets kind of
tiring. I was thinking of going for the slogan "HONK IF YOU
    LOVE CYCLISTS" on my jersey.

Or maybe even "DON'T BOTHER. I'VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE."

  14. he he....good un.

I'd like "overtake with 2-metres clearance" amongst other
messages, but I think there's not enough advertising space
    on jerseys 🙂)

How about "Caution: volatile & profoundly deaf" LOL

  15. "Authority" as it's been called here only comes with
practice, so start off in light traffic and work at
asserting your rights and responsibilities on weekends, then
as you find your confidence building you'll feel comfortable
    in heavier traffic.

As for "it only takes one hit from a car," yes true, but
this doesn't consider that even the most aggressive driver's
first reaction on seeing a cyclist will be to instinctively
try to avoid them. The simple fact is visibility,
confidence, eye-contact and knowing/obeying the road rules
yourself, and developing that sort of sixth sense for when
not to push your luck will protect you.

The only prangs I've ever had in traffic or otherwise were
solely my fault, and I've met some pretty arrogant and
aggressive drivers in my time. When I've done all of the
above, I've been safe as houses, even on awful, narrow, logtruck-
    infested, 100kmh, Tasmanian "B" roads.

There are excess dots in my addy which should be removed
before replying anywhere other than the group.

  16. I just started cycling this summer. Road cycling, actually. Bold for a first timer. First few rides out on the roads cars would randomly honk at me, friendly-like, as if they were cheering me on. So is this a universal gesture? Much like how motorcyclists that other motorcyclists stick out their hand to wave?

If this is the case, I think it's a little annoying, though much appreciated versus the other gestures I've been getting lately. 😉
