"Authority" as it's been called here only comes with
practice, so start off in light traffic and work at
asserting your rights and responsibilities on weekends, then
as you find your confidence building you'll feel comfortable
in heavier traffic.
As for "it only takes one hit from a car," yes true, but
this doesn't consider that even the most aggressive driver's
first reaction on seeing a cyclist will be to instinctively
try to avoid them. The simple fact is visibility,
confidence, eye-contact and knowing/obeying the road rules
yourself, and developing that sort of sixth sense for when
not to push your luck will protect you.
The only prangs I've ever had in traffic or otherwise were
solely my fault, and I've met some pretty arrogant and
aggressive drivers in my time. When I've done all of the
above, I've been safe as houses, even on awful, narrow, logtruck-
infested, 100kmh, Tasmanian "B" roads.
There are excess dots in my addy which should be removed
before replying anywhere other than the group.

Quoted message said:The advice is great, like keep well away from the gutter
and show some authority. Problem is, that you only have to
be hit once, and you most probably will pay for it with
your life, and the car driver will get if he is lucky 6
months behind bars.

then I have to put up with angry joggers and walkers, and
rollerbladers, but thats another story right.
