Undies defeat much of the purpose of a nice pair of shorts -- the moisture and chafing-control properties of the chamois, for one. That wacky stuff is designed to be silky-smooth, snug, and keep your tender skin dry and stationary.

If you've got undies on, all you've got is a snug, shiny black pair of pants (with underwear showing through). May as well just wear... shiny black pants!

I use cycling type boxers as underwear, so if I wish to use something under my shorts, I don’t know which goes over and which under, so I keep it simple using only one, no matters if it’s shorts or boxers 😄

On behalf of Cambo, let me officially open this thread up to girls and their respective anatomies. Ladies, feel free to weigh in.

To those who go "commando" style, do you use any thing like Butt Buttr, Bag Balm or the like to reduce chafing?

"Bag Balm?" Please tell me that's not for real 😄

I go commando, and don't really have chafing problems and whatnot. Just make sure the pad of your shorts is real snug against your nether-regions. I've used both chamois and the cheap fabricky pads and have never had a problem.

Good question. I mean, chafing is 80% of the issue, whether you're using undies or not. On the other hand, I'd say a balm or cream would be more necessary if you're not going commando -- like I said previously, modern shorts are engineered to prevent chafing, and they do so by being supportive and keeping the skin pressed to layers of space-age, super soft, moisture-wicking, smooth padding. If you wear cotton skivies, you're preventing the shorts from doing their job.

For most folks, I'd say the clothing engineers have got it right -- the fancy chamois, if they fit well, are less chafing-prone than your Hanes boxer briefs.

As for butter -- my crotch doesn't seem to need it. Not for now, at least.

Thanks. The reason I asked is when I first started cycling, a guy who has been cycling for over 30 years told me he always wears cotton jockey underwear under his cycling shorts and has never had a problem with chafing. Others swear you have to use Butt Buttr or something like it.

So far - and don't tell anyone this 😉 - but I wear jockeys under my shorts and haven't had any chafing problem at all.

Bareback all the way just like my lizardskin cowboy boots!

I tried the cylcing undies, but trying to get them "situated" was just too much work. Plus, as discussed in a previous thread, the pee package option is easier to implement sans briefs.

Well, it's the extra -- err -- material that makes this category of gear particularly crucial. If board shorts and a pair of cotton undies works for you, that's fantastic, but most men rely on the merciful instincts of the finest engineers and PhDs in the sportswear industry...

I agree with a previous post. The knicks are meant to be worn without undies, hence the chamois. No problem with chafing. I wore knicks under my shorts when I ran a marathon to avoid chafing.
N.B. They have to be cleaned after each use though, otherwise you never know what sort of things would grow in them.

Chamois Butt'r, always, applied to my body although I know that some people apply it to the chamois instead and/or also.
