  1. Can anyone offer me some advice???? I am a fit and healthy
22 year old and I cycle to uni everyday and watch what I
eat. I have been putting weight on more and more. I went to
the doctors and the tested my blood and said I was fine. In
the past year I have put on 2 stone and I am getting very
depressed about it! I have went on a complete diet for 2
months and lost nothing! What can I do now?? I don't know
what to do. Any advice? Thanks. Adam

What did your doctor say about your weight? Did your doc
    think you're overweight?

Muscle weighs more than fat and you're still at an age where
your body is growing, in muscle mass if not in height. You
can put on weight and have none of that gain be fat.

  3. It's definitely fat. The doctors says I am a little over
weight although he can find nothing wrong with me. He wasn't
    interested as I wasn't ill!

Can you tell us you height and weight? What do you do for
exercise? What do you eat? (you could tell us what you eat
with portion sizes on a typical day - do it accurately and
    leave NOTHING out).

If you want to lose weight then you basically have to eat
less and exercise more. How you achieve that is personal.
Some people do well on Atkins others with WW etc. The
commercial diets aren't rocket science. They are just offer
a routine that may help you control what you eat. You can do
it without a commercial diet too. It's just a bit harder.

There is a website www.fitday.com that will help you track
your calories. It'll also tell you your base metabolic rate.
You should aim for BMR-500 calories per day. If you stick to
that you should lose about 1lb a week - and thats optimal.
You can also add in some exercise 30 minutes 3 times a week.
walking, running, biking whatever gets your heart going a
bit faster. Finally to make sure you look good when you have
lost some weight, you could try some weights.

    Keep posting

  5. I will just throw in my two cents worth here. Don't know if
it is an issue for you or not. I struggled with weight all
my life and now have finally figured out what I was doing
wrong all those years. I was not eating enough! If you eat
too little, your body goes into starvation mode and it won't
lose any weight. I am also hypothyroid and this is more
common with hypos. Every time I stopped losing, I made a
point to eat MORE and it worked for me. I have lost 65 lbs.
    in the last year.

The suggestion that you post food from a typical day is a
good one. You might want to post your exercise, too.
Increasing exercise can also prevent weight loss if you are
not eating enough to fuel the exercise. Water is extremely
    important as well.

I know it is frustrating. Good luck to you, Jill

Start from scratch! WRITE DOWN every nmorcel of food and
drink you put in your mouth for two days: look at it
    carefully. Ask yourself:

Am I consuming more than I'm burning? (you may well be, if
you cycle to uni every day and then sit in lectures or a lab
    for 5 or 6 hours)

WHAT am I eating? Look at the list. A well balanced day
contains 5-9 portions of fruit and vegetables; 5-9 portions
of complex carbohydrates (bread - preferably whole wheat -
other cereals, potatoes... count things like rice and pasta
and breakfast cereals; 2-3 portions of dairy foods (milk,
yoghurt, cheese... choose lower fat options; and 2-3
portions of protein foods such as meat and fish, again lower
fat cuts and types wherever you can. Sugary foods should be
kept to a minimum, as should caffeine laden drinks. Water:
drink at least 8 glasses a day in addition to the tea,
    coffee and sodas you drink.

Am I eating too much? Look at the SIZE of the portions: an
apple is one portion, so is a banana. 2 heaped tablespoons
of peas are a portion. 4 oz red meat is a portion. Try
weighing your food to keep on track.

The key to weight loss is portion control, eating a well
balanced diet without too many fatty and sugar laden foods
(cookies, cakes, pastry, fast foods, chocolate... ), and
keeping hydrated properly. The key to weight loss is to eat
like this and eat fewer calories than you burn in the week.

If you get the munchies, look at the pattern of the day: are
you eating at the wrong times? If you have a light breakfast
(or none at all!), then cycle vigorously for half an hour,
you will be starving half way through the morning. The
answer is to eat a decent breakfast: have some carbs then as
well as protein, to prepare for the exercise. Keep some zero
point veggies like celery and carrot sticks handy for
munchies times like mid morning, so you don't get tempted by
the chocolate cookies, or dive into a plate of chips (fries)
    at lunchtime.

Make healthy choices: a chicken breast rather than a
hamburger, boiled new potatoes rather than chips/fries,
salad rather than sauce laden vegetables, light dressings
rather than mayo based creamy ones, a sprinkle of herbs and
lemon juice rather than a rich sauce. Remember that macaroni
cheese is a full meal, not a side dish or a vegetable (it's
NOT a vegetable: it's protein and carbs!).

The dietician I saw before my gall bladder op thought Weight
Watcher's was the best 'diet' around: it isn't really a
'slimming diet' so much as a healthy eating plan for the
rest of your life, as it teaches you to lose weight through
portion control. exercise, and healthy choices, and then how
    to maintain that goal weight.

I've been on a low carb diet. I lost weight quickly but got
sick to death of eating eggs, cream, cheese etc. with few
carbs and having to pay much more for low carb foods.

I am now on WW points. I am slowly losing weight, eating a
balanced diet and do not feel hungry. You must follow it
strictly though. I do it online at www.weightwatchers.com,
but I recently bought their home kit and now will stop
paying US$14.95 per month by quitting. The home kit has
    everything I need.

If that were the case we'd all start overeating again and

I do agree re blood cholesterol and triglicerides usally do
improve on low-carb. I'm talking about articles I have read
which say too much SATURATED fat can clog your arteries. One
of the main causes of heart disease.

if it is an issue for you or not. I struggled with weight
all my life and now have finally figured out what I was
doing wrong all those years. I was not eating enough! If
you eat too little, your body goes into starvation mode
and it won't lose any weight. I am also hypothyroid and
this is more common with hypos. Every time I stopped
losing, I made a point to eat MORE and it worked for me.
I have lost 65 lbs. in the last year.

=> This does not apply to everyone... as soon as I go
    => over 1100
calories a day I start to GAIN weight. And will KEEP
gaining and gaining....... No one gets thinner by eating
MORE calories. If that were the case we'd all start
overeating again and look like Twiggy. The more we ate the
    thinner we'd get.

    Wysong

I'd argue that 'No one' gets thinner by eating more
calories...on the surface you're correct, however a body
that's in starvation mode will put fat on. Only way to break
it is to eat more calories.

been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

Can anyone offer me some advice???? I am a fit and healthy
22 year old and I cycle to uni everyday and watch what I
eat. I have been putting weight on more and more. I went
to the doctors and the tested my blood and said I was
fine. In the past year I have put on 2 stone and I am
getting very depressed about it! I have went on a complete
diet for 2 months and lost nothing! What can I do now?? I
don't know what to do. Any advice? Thanks. Adam

Maybe you need to exercise a little more... Are you eating
or drinking anything in excess? Moderation, in all foods and
drinks is the way to go. That is what I do... Keep the
exercise up, and maybe try a jog here and there, and make
sure you are eating and drinking in moderation. Do not cut
anything out entirely, that is too drastic, just reduce...

  20. Sorry to have started such a controversy. Let me be a little
more detailed. If you eat more cake, cookies, or other empty
stuff, yes, you will gain weight. If you eat more fruits,
vegetables, and water (up to a point), then your body will
not be tempted to go into starvation mode. I gained in my
20's while eating 1000 calories a day and exercising daily.
Now I am losing while eating about 1200 calories a day and
then throwing in an extra 1000 calories about every 10 days.
And yes I am still exercising, but I am in my 50's. Of
course, everyone is different and has to figure out their
own strategy. BUT I still feel that a lot of people are not
losing because they are starving just like I did for many
years before giving up completely. I lost nothing in my 20's
(OK, I didn't need to lose but 20 or 30 lbs. then) and now I
    have lost 65 lbs.
