Brooks leather saddle aficionados know that keeping your
saddle sufficiently saturated with Proofide dressing is a
constant struggle.
I developed an easy and fool-proof method.
The evening before each ride, I melt about an inch of
Proofide in a 10" cast iron skillet. I dip bike shorts into
the Proofide and squish the shorts a few times with a flat-
face potato masher, so the chamois soaks up the maximum
amount of Proofide.
The shorts line-dry overnight over my bathtub. In the
morning, voila! I'm wearing a Proofide applicator for
the commute!
Notes: -- Keep the stove temperature barely warm enough to
melt the Proofide. You aren't trying to cook your shorts :-)
-- I use Spandex shorts with Coolmax chamois, haven't tried
with wool shorts, but a leather chamois would definitely not
work. -- Skillets are abundant at thrift shops, mine was $1.
-- Leaving the Proofide in the skillet between applications
is OK. After it cools, I carefully place plastic wrap on the
surface to keep air and contaminants away. -- Here in dry,
dry, dry Southern California, Proofide evaporation is always
a concern. So I prepare two pairs of shorts for each
workday, one for the morning and one for the return home.
The unworn pair travels in a ziplock bag.
