  1. Earlier today on the previous oyster thread I replied
"Surely you jest. . .etc" to someone who said he couldn't
    find oysters in NY.

I walked around the neighborhood and took a census.

Downstairs, less than 50 feet from the elevator in the
building I live in, there were:

Malpeque (PEI) Caraquet (Nova Scotia?) Kumumoto (WA)

(They also had live scallops and razor clams, among
    other things)

    At Citarella:

Cape Cod Bluepoint Belon (European flats grown in Maine)
Wellfleet (Great oysters from MA) PEI, bed unidentified.

    At local bars:

    Union Square cafe

Duxbury (MA) Hama Hama (WA) Totten Inlet (WA)

    Blue Water Grill

Gigamoto (WA) Stranges Bay (BC) Pacific Orchard (BC) Beau
    Soleil (NS) Malpeque (PEI)

All except Citarella within 2 minute walk. Citarella about
    6 minutes.

    I don't feel terribly deprived.

No stike in Seattle, Jack. About 20 varieties for the
picking in Puget Sound. 🙂 But, if you get tired of them,
you can opt in for two varieties of locally raised
    mussels. Burp!

We moved to Seattle about a year ago, and discovered that
this is close to oyster heaven. The locally harvested
shellfish (oysters, mussels, razor clams, geoduck) are
terrific. Some of our local groceries sell several varieties
of live oysters out of tanks. When they are on sale, we get
them for 5 or 6 dollars per dozen.

My favorite so far are the Penn Cove Select. Somewhat
similar to Tottens, but better (IMHO). I think these are
shipped east - give them a try.

Right you are. I didn't hear that until after I had
posted. Grand Central is one subway stop or a half hour
walk from here. The Oyster Bar usually has at least a
dozen varities available, many of them not available in
    any store i know of.

Is there a downtown Citarella? The only I know of is on
Broadway, Upper West Side. Good to know, if there is!

Hey Alan, May 8th is the first day for U-Pick oysters at
Westcott Bay Sea Farm on San Juan Island. Bring your own
boots and bucket and the oysters are 25 cents apiece!

There is. It's on 6th Ave & 9th St--it's the former home of
    Balducci's (RIP).

I thought they closed to move to another location? Was their
press release a lie? It seemed odd that they would close,
then renovate another space, just stay open until the new
    place is ready.

You're right, they did reopen on the Upper West Side. But if
you live in the Village, and have the arrogant provincialism
we Villagers have, then UWS might as well be RIP. I haven't
been to the Citarella's that replaced Balducci's, but I've
    heard excellent reports.

Anything above 14th Street is not even in Manhattan. I
always considered this the Villager's view of the city ala
Steinberg's New Yorker cover. I cut it close in those days,
living on 13th Street as long as I did.

My *major* (and I should have capitalized major)
disappiontment with Balducci's had nothing to do with their
store, but my fervent wish for a deli sandwich while I was
in the neighborhood. Went across the street to their
sandwich shop, I was crushed. What a downer, and what a slur
to their name. I finally just ordered a tuna sandwich, OMG,
I make tuna sandwiches 100 times better than what they gave
me. For one thing, I do not go into the city to get a
sandwich where the filling is maybe 1/8th the size of the
    two pieces of bread.

As in, Where's the Beef!? And the atmosphere was early dirty
    cafeteria.

But, back to the store, they really were shoehorned into
that small store. They needed a bigger place.

I always liked to go get my own. We had our favorite public
oystering beaches that were actually not very well
known....and they were sandwiched in between a couple of
commercial oyster beds! If I didn't go get them at the
beach, I'd just run into Taylor United and buy them the same
day they were harvested. Oysters were a weekly, sometimes
twice weekly deal back then. Have to make a trip to WA to
    fulfill my cravings for oysters!

If you have a liking for Belon oysters, give a try to the
    Westcott Bay Flats. FANTASTIC!!!!

And if you can get your hands on some Olympia Oysters (the
only native Washington Oyster), make yourself some sauteed
oysters in white wine and butter.

The downtown Citarella is at 9th st and 6th Ave, where
