I don't understand bottled water. Perhaps that is because I
have a filter on my tap. Plus, I don't know about all you
bottled water drinkers out there, but Memphis publishes and
mails out a water study every year. We have some of the best
tasting tap water in the U.S. Having lived all over, I must
concur. It's not hard, it's not soft. Sort of in-between.
Soft water really sucks because you can't rinse shampoo out
of your hair. Hard water has too many trace minerals. Our
water is *just right* 🙂

unsafe to drink. Not all of us reading this newsgroup buy
designer water as an extravagance or because we don't like
the taste of tap water. Some of us just don't really want to
deal with amoebic dysentery or a wide variety of other

Columbus, OH water has a distinct bad odder about it..worse
in the summer. I just prefer the bottled water for drinking.
The rest of the family could care less, but for me the odor
is a turn off..

Sure you can. It is cleaner than when you use hard water.
Soft water makes it feel very slick, just like it is soapy,
even though it is gone. Little or no conditioner is needed

IIRC, West Pennsylvania (quite near Columbus) has some
really soft water. It sucked when I last visited relatives
up there, not only for drinking but for washing things. So I

more scrubbing... no more crud build up under the terlit rim
either... dishwasher does just fine with half a tablet, and
clothes washes with half as much laundry soap. Saves money
on cleaning products, saves plumbing, makes hot water
systems much more efficient, and definitely saves septic
systems. Water softeners pay for themselves in short order.

BTW, for the other posters, the best thing they can do is
invest in a reverse osmosis filter. Just changing the pre
and post filter every 9 months will extend the life of the
membrane by a factor of 3 to 4.

No, I use it for three purposes only: my reef tank and

Why should I when it costs about $1 for a 5 gallon bottle?
Water isn't really an extravagance here. The exception: the
same water from the same company in 1 liter bottles at the
market is $1 for bottle same as the 5 gallon bottle
delivered to the house. So..we buy 5 gallons and just use
nalgene bottles to take our water to school or work.

I'm not about to start distilling water for a family of four
plus 4 dogs when I can buy it at less then $1 for 5 gallons
- it's just not cost effective.

ago? God people were getting sick. I don't recall the
details but I think a few people may have died. There was
also an agricultural run off at the lake my brother lives on
about 3 years ago. They couldn't even take the boats out or
